Where is DISH going?

I keep reading all of these news articles about cord cutters and the loss of satellite subscribers. I keep hearing that while Directv is suffering, DISH is hurting even more.

I can tell you that I can bundle a Double or Triple Play offer from the cable company and save money overall. At some point, with the rising costs, I feel like I will have to do it. I've been looking hard, and been holding out. The cable company wants to hammer me on stand alone internet. The phone company DSL is just too slow, and that cost is going up too.

DISH going it alone is noble, but it continues to shed subscribers. Where are we going to be in three years? I think the heyday is over. I do seriously see satellite taking a big hit in the new year or two. Streaming options are abound, but again, stand alone internet is getting pricey - even more if you hit the data cap, which is likely with 3 or 4 TVs and multiple users in the household using more and more data.

That cable company deal will only be good for a year or two, if it is like the ones offered in most places. To add to that, cable companies are talking about doubling rates for customers in the coming years.

Get ready for home internet prices to double

If you aren't in a place which has ISP competition, you are going to pay more. Period.

The writing’s been on the wall. Loss of revenue in pay TV has to be made up for somewhere. The market says cord cutters need to pay more for internet since they don’t buy traditional TV packages. Sucks, but that’s just the way it is. And like you said, ncted it’s the locations without competition among internet providers that will be hit hardest. Hell, regularly priced DSL from Fairpoint (our only provider here) is $83 a month for 20/1 mbps. Like my friends all say about living in a rural area, “that’s the price you pay to live in paradise!”

Thank god people can still choose OTA to get some basic TV options (for now).

I am slowly being pushed to cable/internet package. I have stayed with my phone company for almost 30 years. I also have internet with them. The problem is that they can't offer the higher speeds to come even close to the cable folks. I took a day vacation yesterday to allow the phone company to upgrade my internet speed to 25 megs......at no charge. They are fighting hard to keep the people with land lines. After over 5 hours, I was informed that they would have to run new wiring in the house to achieve that speed. I told them no way. Keep in mind that this was supposed to be a quick upgrade according to the agent on the phone.....flip a switch in the main office, combine a couple pair of wires outside the house & replace the modem/router. Should have known better. Spectrum cable is offering 100 megs when bundled with tv & phone service. So it won't be long that I won't have much choice, but switch if I want any type of internet speed

I have an industry friend who told me last week that AT&T wants people to drop their landlines. Their aging infrastructure is more expensive to maintain than it is profitable. When we dropped our 7 business lines with them to go to VoIP with Comcast, they didn’t bat an eye. No retention offers, nothing. They want you off your landline. That’s not where the money is

I think I remember reading that ATT was supposed to end support for the maintenance of the landline cables strung on all those telephone polls around the country by 2020.

ATT is not just ending maintenance, they are ending service, Verizon also for all the old lines-

AT&T has long since been associated with telephones. So it came as a bit of a surprise that the telecom giant wrote a letter to the FCC in 2009 asking for permission to phase out their analog landline service. It came as even more of a surprise when AT&T started declaring their intention to end copper POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) by the year 2020

AT&T to End Analog Landline Phone Services?

Verizon: Let us install fiber—or we’ll shut off your phone service

I can tell you from painful experience, they want nothing to do with traditional, old land lines.

The regular Comcast Triple Play price is still a better price when I bundle everything.

Traditional services are expecting a continuing decline around the 1.7 million mark for several more years per report on one of the business channels. Sports has somewhat been the stabilizer preventing mass exit but that could be changing also with more and more disgruntled ex-sports fans joining the exit.
