BritBox - Home

BritBox has nothing to do with BBC America. It (BritBox) is a service provided by BBC/ITV, AMC Networks has a minority share in the service. BBC America is a joint venture of BBC Worldwide and AMC Networks, it is just a linear cable channel with some British content. Much less now than in the past.

BBC America is disappointing as there is little real British programming. I even paid extra for the news pack add on to get BBC World. For a time there was a free app on the Roku that offered free UK Networks, ITV, BBC, etc. It was fun to watch, but there was some copyright issues I read and it went away. BritBox I think offers a lot of the same OTA UK channels, but I have not used it.

BritBox offers current and past programming from BBC and ITV for a monthly fee. It's usually stuff that isn't offered on Acorn, PBS, Netflix or Amazon in the USA. BBCAmerica is pretty worthless anymore when it comes to actual British programming.

Britbox, $6.99/month after 7 day free trial. App apparently is miserable. On the Roku, is it any better?

Acorn is $4.99/month or $49/year. Also has a 7 day free trial. It is the only one of the two that has Doc Martin. Anyone have Acorn? Any good on the Roku?

I’m pretty sure we’re going to give it a whirl this weekend.

I've only looked at Britbox on the Ipad when it first came out, I use a vpn for my brit fix until they start showing everything at the same time with Britbox. The first 6 seasons of Doc Martin are also on Netflix, the 7th and 8th are only on Acorn. You can also watch/subscribe to Acorn through Amazon with Amazon Channels.

... Anyone have Acorn?...
We have Amazon Prime, with the add on Acorn TV “channel”, which we watch on an Apple TV connected to our Visio TV via HDMI. Even though our WISP internet connection is only 2 Mbs, we almost never have any buffering. That "may" be because the Acorn TV streams are coming off of Amazon's servers.

FWIW BritBox is strictly British — BBC and ITV. While Acorn TV also includes programming from Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Do you need a vpn to subscribe to Britbox? also if so, do they offer the live BBC/ITV channels?

No vpn is needed. BritBox is meant for the US market. There are no live broadcasts either. It’s 95% archive material along with same day release of some popular shows that don’t have other US releases, like Strictly Come Dancing, Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night and the Brit soaps, Holby City, Emmerdale etc...
