HBO/Cinemax Takedown

Once before we could get internet here, I responded to a Verizon Fios ad. I called them and they said there were no plans for it in my area (this was in the time of the Verizon NJ fiberoptic promise, but that's another subject). I asked why then did you send me the ad?

Only one ad? That's nothing. They kept sending me big post cards every couple of weeks saying "FIOS is HERE!" for about 5 years before it actually was.

Consolidated Communications keeps sending me flyers that say "50 MBPS DSL IS NOW AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCATION!!!"

I laugh because I know darn well that 21.5 mbps is the best they can do in the whole darn town.

I like to call and rip into them, asking why they waste paper and postage sending me these flyers when they can't deliver those speeds.

Well at least you finally got it. Being out in the sticks, Fios was cancelled here.

At the time Starband was my monopoly but the lag was really bad and the rain fade was really bad. If the dish was wet it didn't work. I was constantly wiping it off (ground level). And the LNB was so heavy it caused the arm to sag over time. At least it was something. I think Dish sold it to Hughes.

Anyway that was my monopoly then, now it is Service Electric cable internet.

Sorry to diverge from cell carrier monopoly, that here is Verizon. Insufficient signal from other carriers.

I’m sticking with tMobile. They are not the best coverage(still pretty damn good these last couple years), but their customer service is what is going to keep me. They really act as the “uncarrier” with their CS and that was enough for me.

Their recent experiment with charging $15 to move your SIM to a different phone was unexpected and uncalled-for, though. It's a GSM system, you're not supposed to even have to tell them you've changed phones let alone pay for permission to do so.

I think that's just laziness. I got ads to upgrade to bonded VDSL when all that was available here was 3Mb ADSL (still is, years later), and ads from Comcast offering me internet when the system is still analog (just a few weeks ago.)

It's not quite true that they are the only ones. I had Century Link 5gbit ADSL for a few years after Starband. But after I kept calling a direct line to the engineer (he had to hate me ) he finally told me they'll never upgrade it. Secv was coming and the rest is history.

Secv is good. And at 25gbit we can have 4 Netflix going at once no problem. I wonder if there is a way I can get a network drive out in the world without them blocking it.

25 Gbps, now that would be impressive. Considering you'd be hard-pressed to find an enterprise grade DIA fiber connection over 10 Gbps and that would cost thousands of dollars a month, I'll go out on a limb and say he meant 25 Mbps.

yeah 25 gbs is nice=
1 gig is 149 a month via secv.
so hmm that would be awesome for 25 gbs :) unless u working for google
or 1 gig times 25=- daisy chain internet via 25 1 gbs
at least 3750 dollars via secv per month

that would be a phenomenal connection and secv is only for private connection
3225 per month price maybe discount but wow
1 gig is 150 i stick with 75 mbs sec till i upgrade in future and if not secv upgrades me automatically when they feel like it :) forcibly haha *cough*

Technically pure GSM ended at 2G, with GPRS. EDGE was originally supposed to be 3G, but later demoted to 2.5G. UMTS was both 3G and 4G, depending on when in time you read the definitions, but all of these, plus LTE, are based on GSM tech:

"In telecommunication, Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is a standard for high-speed wireless communication for mobile devices and data terminals, based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA technologies."
LTE (telecommunication) - Wikipedia

Of course, UMTS uses WCDMA, so this whole thing is pretty bastardized at this point.

GSM in used for phone calls is 3g. Not data....4g introduced VoIP for calls...they were supposed to be part of the LTE stream

While UMTS retains certain aspects of GSM (like the use of SIM cards), it is significantly different in many other ways. For instance, UMTS uses a WCDMA radio interface instead of TDMA like the original GSM used (for voice and data). It does still use the same circuit switched voice tech on the back-end however, unlike VoLTE, so I think we're just talking about split hairs at this point.

GSM is basically a t1 cut up in 24 56k channels...if you are using that for data..thats kinda like using a 56k modem on a landline...data and phone calls are treated differently in 3g ...while in 4g..calls and data share the same stream
