Fire TV Cast

I must say, the guide data is way better than what Dish is using. Now I just need to sort out my antenna situation...

The OTA guide using the module in the vip211k has been messed up for sometime. Even though only two Portland OR TV stations changed frequencies, 2 (ABC) & 6 (CBS), None of the main net guides are correct. Haven't been in months. First it was 2 & 6, now all of them, the ones that even have an OTA guide.
2-KATU-ABC Showing some PBS guide, 6-KOIN-CBS Showing a different PBS guide, 8-KGW-NBC, showing a FOX guide, 10-KOPB-PBS showing MYTV guide, 12-KPTV-FOX no guide, and 49-KPDX-MYTV no guide. The ReCast is fantastic with a great 2 week guide that is totally accurate and the DVR function works very good too.

I took some time to compare out of home streaming with Dish Anywhere today. They behave very similarly in general, but DA definitely starts up faster and is a tad more responsive to trick play actions. Of course, DA has desktop clients as well, so DA is better over all, which I would expect given the price we pay every month to have a Hopper3/HWS.

Still no Dish Anywhere on the Roku, but it works great on the Fire TV. Plus I have access to many apps directly.

I ended up returning the Recast. While it was fun to try it out, it just wasn't good enough to keep around. I need to run my antenna feed to my living room, so I can add OTA to my Hopper to keep us from suffering when the inevitable retransmission disputes happen, and maybe eventually dropping LiL locals altogether.

Try just calling the channel number. That’s how I use mine. Ie; say “channel 3.1” or “channel 5.2”
Thanks Fred. That works. Seems the name for ABC on FireTV is Channel 13 Action News. Not very convenient. I try to teach my wife these new gadgets and these anomalies blow me out of the water.

Yeah, that was confusing for us too. FOX, ABC, CBS, PBS, and CW were all network names, but NBC was WRAL for some odd reason.

Sorry to hear that. I do have a high gain UHF Yagi and the signal strength is very good. I do notice the Fire stick 4K works faster with the Recast, than it does even with my Fire Pendant.

I'm having issues with most of the VHF channels in Vegas. I have TVs and Tivos connected to the same antenna and none of them have problems picking up the channels. Going to try moving the Recast to a different room and see if that makes a difference.

My Recast complained about my VHF station having low signal regularly, even though the picture was perfect on recordings, and it came in fine on other devices without error.

Since trying the Recast, I've tried the AirTV "Black Box" and the Tablo Lite. Both of these have trouble dealing with what seems to be an otherwise perfect signal on NBC (Both) and ABC (Tablo). I assume the same signal problems are causing both the Recast "low signal" errors and the AirTV and Tablo problems. I don't have a good way to measure SNR, BERR, or PERR, so I cannot say for sure. All I know is the picture and sound are pretty close to perfect on the tuner in my Insignia TV. At least the Recast just popped up an error message. The AirTV and Tablo flat out refused to "tune" the channel(s). I assume this has to do with how the Recast does transcoding differently than the Tablo and, I assume, AirTV. This is the same old problem I've had with OTA over the years. Nothing works as expected where I live, which isn't all that far from the transmitter (~28 miles).

I am seriously taking another look at the OTT streaming services. I tried out Hulu Live and thought it was pretty terrible. I actually like Sling, and would go with that if I had a good OTA solution in place for locals. There is a very good chance I will stick with Dish in the long term as well, but I feel like its days as a quality solution are numbered, and it is hard to justify the cost when so much of what we watch is streamed any more.

I get that low signal reading too even though I get 100% on everything off other meters, so plenty of signal. No issues though, even though I do get the message on the ReCast. If I reboot it, the message generally goes away. I think it may be a glitch in the system. Weird though, the past couple of days KGW-8.1 Portland's guide shows up as XEQ Mexico City (I kid you not) and the 8.1 channel guide shows the channel in Spanish. I went online to check XEQ and yes, it is the guide for them. Everything else it normal including 8.2 and 8.3. If I go to the TV and check 8.1, the current guide is normal. How does Recast get their guide? I figured it was from the stations, regular OTA.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Amazon is using Tribune for their guide data (as opposed to Tivo/Rovi that Dish uses).

I'm seeing a lot of "weak signal" reports of late and I'm of the opinion that the signal is either too hot and the AGC isn't able to cool it down or there is multipath present that these tuners aren't dealing with. An attenuator might help in both cases or perhaps a splitter with a dummy load on the second leg.
