Charlie Ergen-backed pay-TV operation DISH Network could be about to merge or consolidate with DirecTV.

Numerous reports suggest that with DirecTV haemorrhaging subscribers since its AT&T take-over, a disposal by AT&T with DISH Network being the favoured target.

I hope not. It would effectively eliminate all competition for millions of rural customers.

I see it like the merger of Sirius and XM. Bound to happen sooner or later because the market won't be able to sustain two separate linear satellite carriers much longer.

Article is click-bait. Charlie/Dish has not indicated any desire to buy directv in this environment.... This "rumor" has been started by the wall street crowd who want to restore AT&T to high profitability and dump directv. They see only Dish as a likely suitor because Directv and satellite in general is in a free fall with losing customers and dish would really be the only company in a position to purchase (in their eyes).

Maybe later, but at least not until everybody can get high speed unlimited internet.

Both satellite TV companies are still making plenty of money unlike Sirius and XM were.
