DISH, DirecTV to merge?

Why in the world would Charlie even consider merging with a company who already said they were getting out of the satellite business? I don't think he's prepared to throw them a lifeline when he's going to get a bunch of their subs already without doing anything at all. It's already happening, according to the techs on Satguys.

AT&T pushed to unload DirecTV as troubles mount, Dish may be best option
As the troubles pile up on AT&T Inc.’s DirecTV subsidiary, Wall Street bankers have been inundating the telecom giant with proposals to sell off the satellite TV operator with Charlie Ergen’s Dish Network as one potential suitor, the Fox Business Network has learned.

Orby is pretty much of a joke mainly for people who can't qualify for Dish or DirecTV.

Or who don’t want to pay for Dish or DirecTv.

I happened to have a Orby DVR dropped off at the house tonight by UPS. I am looking forward to checking it out.

You have to pay for the equipment and installation either upfront or on a time payment plan, the channel selection is minimal at best, the picture quality isn't so great but not bad for having only two transponders, you have to get your local channels from an OTA antenna so if you don't get a signal you don't get the channel, the DVR lacks features and on and on.

Also, by the time you figure in the equipment and installation costs it's not much cheaper if it's cheaper at all than Dish or DirecTV, especially if you compare it to the Flex pack or the Top 120 without locals.

A spin off I could see but not a merger with Dish which would probably not get government approval, hopefully not anyway.

AT&T just recently finished assimilating all the DirecTV customer records into the main collective so I would think that a spin off would be very complicated.

AT&T has been trying to kill off DirecTV for a long time. They don't want it.

I think it'll be more of an "absorbsion" than a merger and it'll all become dish (new logo).

I think with the impending 5g rollout Charlie is less inclined to engage in merger talks for Direct TV. That said, if AT&T offered it at a bargain basement price (which they probably won't) he might reconsider. Also, considering all the streaming and other options available I would think a merger wouldn't meet with much fed resistance.

These “analysts” seem to ignore the larger subscriber base allows for a stronger negotiating position for content. DTV is still the largest chunk of that.

And of course, they had to blame Trump for SOMETHING.

Charlie Ergen-backed pay-TV operation DISH Network could be about to merge or consolidate with DirecTV.

Numerous reports suggest that with DirecTV haemorrhaging subscribers since its AT&T take-over, a disposal by AT&T with DISH Network being the favoured target.

Oohhhhhh Claude Greiner ...................... Where are ya, big fella?lolz....

IIRC back when AT&T bought them one of the reasons was to pick up the subscriber numbers to help with content pricing for their OOTT streaming service. So what, now they don’t care at all about that? And as mentioned earlier does Dish even have the money/credit available to do a deal with their wireless deal and buildout also needing dollars?

I would usually agree. But this time around, no real action is at least a year or more likely 2 or 3 away. By which point, Dish may have siphoned away as many subscribers as they could hope for. Making DTV next to worthless.

And Dish is clearly moving into a 5G future.
