Twice now I have seen a marathon on that I wanted to record. I set the Hopper up to record all, new and old but forget the stupid 20 show maximum. By the time I catch it the Hopper has deleted all the first season or more.

I know that there's a setting for "record all" but I don't use it often enough to remember it.

I just found where to change the default to "record all" hopefully that will fix it. :)

Bummer.
Go into Settings and click on Timer Defaults and change what you wish. I have changed my Timer Default settings to End 10 minutes late and Keep to All. If you have a Hopper 3 the End 10 minutes late shouldn't be an issue. I never have a show ending cut too short anymore.

Those Timer Default settings have been known to sometimes go back to their original default settings, instead of the settings you chose. This especially may happen after a software update. So, any time you set a timer where you know that you will want to record more than 20 episodes, it is a good idea to check your Timer Defaults to make sure that they are still set properly, and then also check the timer itself after you set it, to make sure the Timer Defaults are still working properly.

Thanks! That's a helpful tip.

Considering that the DVR will overwrite any UN-protected recordings when the HDD reaches its limit of capacity (and recordings NOT protected is the default setting), I don't know why Dish would have as default the 20 recordings limit feature. The HDD is likely doing wear leveling anyway, so recordings after 20 are likely being laid down on "virgin" parts of the HDD, anyway. Also, it is intuituve for users to manually delete recordings if they wish, and let's remember that many subscribers are NOT techy folk, rather just people like the OP who just want to record their shows and expect the recordings will stay until either they delete or the DVR needs to record over them and not be interested or able to go drilling down in the menu of settings.

A limit of 20 recordings as default in a single person--let alone a MULTI-person household--is absolutely a silly low number of recordings. Dish, just leave the default number of recordings set as OFF.

I think you are misinterpreting the recording limit setting. This setting is for each timer, not total recordings, if I'm reading your post correctly.

Funny, I read DishSubLA's post, and assumed that it still meant the limit of 20 recordings per timer, which is what we have been discussing. It is a valid point, even when interpreted correctly (which I assume I am doing). The hard drive has enough total space that having a timer keep recording a really long marathon of a particular show really shouldn't make a difference as far as risking having existing content get deleted. This is, of course, as long as the user is doing a relatively good job of keeping the hard drive tidy by either deleting events that have already been watched, or transferring them to an external hard drive. If the user wants to protect important recordings from automatically being deleted, or if the user actually does want to limit the number of recordings for any particular timer, then those options are already available also. The point is that we should not be forced to double-check each timer we set, if we do not want to impose a limit on the number of recordings for that timer. That setting is way too easy to overlook, and I have been annoyed by this artificially-imposed limit many, many times. My sister has the same problem of forgetting to check that setting. So, I have to keep reminding her to change it to "All." Unfortunately, she often does not notice the limit until after she has already missed some episodes, due to the default limit deleting old recordings as new episodes get recorded. So, I agree that the (Dish-set) default setting should be changed to "All."

You are correct, I did not state this correctly, and did get confused. Thanks for pointing out the error in my communication. So, still a rotten idea for each timer to be limited for only 20 recordings for reasons I'm sure people on this forum know, and considering the DVR will overwrite any UNprotected recordings and deleting recordings is sufficiently intuitive.
