MLB 2020 Baseball season

This stupid choice to CHANGE the baseball Rules is just plain dumb.

Going into Extra Innings, they have decided to put a player on 2nd base to start the inning ...
What is this, Pee Wee baseball ?

Yet, they will NOT use that rule when in the Playoffs ....
WTF

I'm gonna start calling baseball, NASCAR. with the rules changes. :facepalm

Most are temporary. They've determined that they're necessary to try and get a truncated season in. Aren't having those better than having no season at all?

I guess I'll have to sell my stock in sunflower seed companies because there's no spitting allowed. I want to see what Terry Francona is going to do, he goes thru gum and sunflower seeds like crazy.:biggrin

They can get a season in with or without the rules changing.
I don't mind the DH change, but the man on 2nd base is just dumb.

In the Korean league that recently started up, there's been a rash of muscle, lat, etc. pulls, and other injuries due to lack of conditioning. I think rules like the second base runner are attempts to minimize that happening during prolonged games. If you don't like it, don't watch!!

DH - A failed concept, but an argument for another day. The so-called "union" likes it because the DH is often some fat old man. Since NL and AL rosters are the same size, it if fair to say that said fat old man is taking the spot of a young complete player.

Man on 2nd - Ignorant. Sacrifice man to 3rd. Any hit, or even a deep out, scores. Ignorant.

60 games - Blame the "union".

Expanded playoffs - The players really get a token payment for the playoffs, contrasted to the billions they get for the regular season. And the teams, more or less, share the national TV $$ equally, a form of revenue sharing which helps smaller market teams. So the owners love it. But there are already too many teams in the playoffs and the playoffs last too long.

Anyone who believes that any of these changes will ever be reversed - Naïve.

Likely a lot of sports fans won’t, don’t you think?
Fair weather fans won't. And even some bigger baseball fans may not. Anyone who followed the negotiations between the owners and PA may also be turned off.

Summer is usually a bad time for TV ratings even in other years. All I know is, it will be good to have an option to be able to put a game on, check out some scores, etc. Might be a welcome distraction at times....

I may turn it on for background if I'm working on something, like a lot of other tv. I have no interest otherwise. The fact it is something live and new will be its only saving grace for me.
Agreed. Some here take it was too seriously. With all of the other crappy things going on in this world, it might be nice to turn on a game and at least have the illusion of normalcy for a little while (whatever that was).

As I understand the term, a "fair weather fan" is someone who follows a particular team only when it wins. I don't see the application here, unless you mean that under the Manfred rules, baseball will be in a poor time, with which I certainly agree.

The core issue comes down to the simple fact, IMHO, that the current commissioner simply does not like baseball very much. When you want to make wholesale changes to the rules, it is because you don't like what it is now. Baseball is awesome, as is.

Certainly. The so-called "union" has not acted in good faith relative to us since its founding.

Which brings up the quote attributed to the last real commissioner, Fay Vincent, "what the hell else are they going to show all summer?" Of course, it isn't the early 90s any more. There are new sports. There are new forms of entertainment and gaming. More to come. With baseball tied between a management that really doesn't like baseball and a "union" that is the epitome of out-of-touch self-centered greed, baseball risks damage that can never be repaired.

Above Jimbo mentioned NASCAR. A great analogy and example. Less than 20 years ago, NASCAR got roughly three times the TV ratings of today and could not add seats fast enough. Its athletes were near to the same celebrity status as those in other sports. Corporations stood in line to get on the cars. Then some idiots started changing the rules. And most tracks have razed 10s of 1000s of seats; cars are sponsored by obscure products, or not at all; TV is stuck in a deal signed long ago and when it finally expires, the sport will be lucky to get a fifth of that; and most any driver could walk down main street anywhere (including Charlotte) and not be recognized. All because of rule changes. And a management that, like baseballs, did not like its sport nor the fans of its sport.

Hard to believe this is the same team that won a franchise record 119 games and a World Series championship 20 months ago. That pitching staff is wretched

I agree with 95% of what you mentioned here ...
The part about NASCAR not liking thier sport, I think is wrong, I think (is it still France in charge ?) they do like it, but are trying to find something creative to draw more people in ... however, Nascar is a hard sport to draw people into unless there consistency ...
Rules changes have been happening regularly that I can think of since probably the 2005 season maybe ... mind you they always have a little changes to try to keep the cars competitive with one another ...

Prime example ... Yesterday I was flipping thru channels and found the race on, I kept it on for awhile in the back ground while I did other things ...
Then I got done with what I was doing and I sat down and watched, and I saw there was like 5 laps to go ... so I'm paying attention while looking at the standing to see where my favorite are ...
Down to 2 laps to go, then 1 lap and its over .... so and so won the race ... didn't matter who.

THEN I was informed by the broadcasters that the final stage of the race was about to start ...

That is WRONG ...

You only have 1 WINNER ...

This "Stage racing" has for all intensive purpose ended my joy of watching Nascar ....

Its stupid and a gimmick ...
