We had a really bad electrical storm come through the area today with lots of lightening. When I got home and tried to turn on Dish, the tv says nothing is hooked up to input. The green light is on the Hopper but no picture. So I tried resetting it. Then I tried unplugging it. Nothing. So I assume it is a goner. My question is whether there is any hope of recovering the saved recordings on the DVR? I doubt it but thought someone on here might have a hope of a suggestion. Thanks.

You might try another source on that TV before giving up on that Hopper. Do you have any Joeys?

But if it is the Hopper, you might try hooking up the hard disk in the old/dead Hopper to the new/good Hopper and then, hooked up that way, transfer your recordings to an EHD. Then unplug the old disk, reconnect the new disk inside the new Hopper, and transfer your recordings back. Make sense?

Yes. That does make sense. Once I receive the new Hopper, I’ll give it a try.

Did you try using a different output on that Hopper (such as component, or the yellow/red/white composite cables) to connect it to the TV? If it is connected by HDMI, did you try simply unhooking the HDMI cable and hooking it back in, or replacing it with a new HDMI cable? Since the green power light still comes on, these steps are the first things I would try before assuming that the Hopper is dead.

I tried a different HDMI cable. Didn’t have any component cables to try. I think it is probably fired since the Joey says it can not locate the hopper.

I would unplug the power from the hopper and all Joeys. Wait a few minutes, then plug in the hopper and let it reboot. If the hopper comes back on and works, that would be the time to plug the joeys back in.

One more question: when you plug the Hopper back in, does it make any noise, like the sound of a hard drive spinning up? I know that these Hoppers are much quieter than the old DVR's used to be, but they still make some noise, right? That would be one way to tell if the old Hopper's hard drive still works.

When it first plugged in, it makes a revving noise for maybe half a second. Then nothing.

I have had HDMI ports blown out on three different TVs from nearby lightning hits. I now have a HDMI surge protector plugged into the 4th TV. Of course, I don't know if it is really going to protect it.
