Here is a curious one from today's uplink report. Shop HQ has been added to a new channel number, 244. This channel number is HD-only on Eastern Arc, while the Western Arc equivalent is SD-only.

New Uplinks / Mappings – Channels Available
244 SHPHQ ShopHQ added to 119° TP 14 (SD Hidden) AVAILABLE
244 SHPHQ ShopHQ added to 72.7° TP 7 (HD Hidden) AVAILABLE

While I am always glad to see new HD channels (even shopping channels) it seems peculiar that this one would only be HD on one Arc. Even more peculiar is that it looks like this HD feed is native to channel 244, rather than being mapped there from a four-digit channel number like most of the HD feeds are.

Just another wasted channel that I won't watch but alas I have a new one to watch in Start TV on 291.

Just another wasted channel that I won't watch ...
Well, at least Dish is saving bandwidth on the Western Arc version. :biggrin
... but alas I have a new one to watch in Start TV on 291.
And also, COZI coming soon on channel 253, apparently. (I thought that it was funny that James Long's description of the channel still lists it as El Rey, though.) :)

Adding more channels so that way they can say 399 channels for only $99...Of course 379 channels are ones nobody ever watches...;)

And this one is not even a new channel. The HD feed is new for Eastern Arc, but the SD feed is just a duplicate of channel 134, where Shop HQ has been carried for years. So, kind of hard to count that as "adding" a channel, especially for Western Arc. Maybe Dish was just hoping that nobody would notice this. ;)

Perhaps it is an experiment by Dish, giving HD bandwidth to an SD channel, to see if it provides much of an improvement to the picture quality. I seem to remember Dish doing that to a couple of Viacom channels years ago. If Dish likes the results, maybe they will start doing this to other channels that are currently only being carried in SD. Perhaps Dish thinks that as long as we see the "HD" indicator in the guide, that will eliminate most of our complaints about the channels not being carried in HD, whether the actual feed really is HD or not. This would especially be true on Eastern Arc, where for many channels (especially with a typical installation of 61.5 and 72 only) there is no SD feed next to the "HD" feed to be able to do a side-by-side comparison of the same channel.
