HBO Max - WarnerMedia Announces Upcoming Streaming Service

Watched Episode 2... err... 3 and it seems some remastering in live action scenes with special effects (soul globes) aren't quite as good.

I wish they would release this on physical. I don't like buying VOD. Amazon, I believe has this remaster at $30 a season (VOD).

itunes has the complete series it at $69, but it goes on sale quite often, I bought it at $29.99 ( SD version) a few months ago which they just upgraded to HD ( I checked).

They remastered it 4:3, so not in widescreen. The remaster is pretty good. That show should be given a lifetime award for producing such quality on a shoestring of a budget.
I was confused when I went to check it out because the first episode was in 16:9, but subsequent episodes seem to be 4:3. It does look much better than what I watched on Prime Video.

Good to hear. The "first" episode is confusing as the true first episode is actually a movie and the first episode is the second episode. o_O

The Gathering was not remastered.

What are you talking about when you say physical? DVD's? I've had the complete series on DVD for quite some time.

The Gathering is pretty bad picture wise. The remastered stuff is quite good although it is odd watching material formatted 4:3. This is the iTunes purchase on an AppleTV.

I had Hbo through Roku and it gave me live streams of HBO east and west coast. I want to know why I can't get live streams of Hbo with the HBO MAX app? I like to watch Bill Maher live on Friday nights and have a drink. I have to wait till the next day to watch Real time. This is the only show I care to watch live.

Real Time is archived so you can watch it whenever you want.

Yeah, it sucks that they don't have the live channels like Roku and Amazon channels did. I haven't found a workaround.

In the PT zone, I'm able to watch Real Time by 10pm on Friday (the night it airs) in the HBO Max app. It might pop up earlier (I'll have to check), but in the past when I subbed through the HBO Now app, I had to wait until the next day to watch. I've always been able to watch John Oliver the night it airs. That being the case, I really have no need for any kind of live access.

Checking tonight, it looks like I'm actually able to watch new episodes of Real Time as early as 7pm PT. Live channels is officially moot for me.

Will it be there at the same time as the live version is broadcast? Otherwise it is the same thing. I will have to stay up later to watch it when it finally is archived. I don't like to stay up past 10:30 on Fridays since I have been up since 3am to get ready for work. Saturday mornings aren't the same for me. Watching any later it would feel out of date.

So I would have to stay up till 11pm to watch it and I'm usually in bed by then and asleep after being up all day since 3am for work. But that is earlier than when I had Hbo Now or Hbo go. Either way I feel like HBO Max isn't as good as the HBO I got off Roku before ,at least for live feeds. The content is better on the Max so that is one consolation.

I think they upload it right after the broadcast airing.

If you want HBO Live, then sub to HBO on Amazon Prime (if you have it) then you get HBO Max for free. We'll included.

I watched the Gathering the other day, While I like B5 I've watched it so many times over the years different qualities as well as when it was in TV. Too be honest I'm kind of tired of it, I love for a remake, but it's going to be really hard having the actor perform the characters with the same passion and awesomeness as the original cast.

HBO on Prime Video Channels will reportedly be going away in 2021:

So new episodes are probably available on demand as early as 5pm PT/8pm ET.

My bigger point is that with HBO Max, I no longer have to wait until next day as I did for HBO Now. Previously Real Time was the only weekly show I was aware of that you couldn't watch the same night it airs in app.

It's odd that the HBO Max app doesn't include a live stream of at least the original HBO linear channel. But then I thought it was odd that the old HBO Now app didn't either.

The Showtime (standalone OTT) and Showtime Anytime (cable authenticated) apps have always included live streams of the east and west feeds of the original Showtime linear channel. I currently subscribe to the Epix Now (standalone OTT) app and it has live streams of all four Epix channels (Epix, Epix 2, Epix Hits and Epix Drive-In). I assume that their Epix (cable authenticated) app does too.

Maybe HBO didn't want to step on their MVPD partners' toes too much when they launched HBO Now as a direct-to-consumer standalone service. "This new HBO Now thing is purely an on-demand service -- we're leaving distribution of the actual HBO channels as something for just our cable partners." Except that they also allow Prime Video, which isn't an MVPD at all, to distribute the HBO linear channels as part of the HBO add-on. Or maybe it was just that HBO didn't want to bother with the incremental cost of including live streams in their own apps? But I can't imagine it costs much.

At any rate, before HBO Max was launched last spring, AT&T leaders were talking about it eventually absorbing the AT&T TV Now service, i.e. offering a contract-free bundle of live cable channels that could be added to the base on-demand service, much like Hulu has been doing for years now. Sounded like that feature might be added in 2021. It would definitely be odd for the HBO Max app to offer live channels like ABC, NBC, CNN, TBS, USA, Discovery, ESPN, and Nickelodeon but not HBO, HBO 2, HBO Family, etc.

But now that AT&T TV Now has essentially been folded into the flagship AT&T TV service, I'd say it's up in the air whether HBO Max ever offers a live cable bundle add-on. But aside from the concept of an add-on live channel package, there was separate talk from AT&T about HBO Max hosting select live programming, such as Turner sports and CNN news, as part of the app/service. But all that talk was before Kilar (former Hulu CEO) came on board at AT&T to run their streaming operations.

So, who knows, it's still possible that we see the app's UI rejiggered a bit in the coming months to include a Live section that might include one or more of the HBO linear channels. I really can't see what the downside would be for them to do it. IMO, it could only increase the average time spent inside the app.
