The switch in FREQUENCY is what determines the change in distance. Putting a digital signal through the IDENTICAL transmitter DOES. NOT. CHANGE. how are the signal goes.

A analog transmitter is not identical to digital
Just about everyone moved from VHF to UHF
UHF just is not the same coverage as VHF
There are a handful of stations that did not move
They had to increase power AFTER the switch to digital
 
I guess all those old analog channels in the VHF range really didn't have to relocate to UHF
They should have just been happy with digital range that was 1/2 the size of the analog range
The FCC had no business switching everybody from the lower VHF to UHF
It really made no difference
A signal is just a signal
Many (~400) stations are still on VHF or have returned to VHF, both low and high. May VHF stations also had to use available UHF channels as an interim tool while simulcasting both analog and digital modulated signals during the transition. Some elected to stay on the UHF channel while others used temporary UHF channels for their analog signals, keeping their existing VHF channel for the new digital signal.

And many were able to DECREASE power. The lack of coverage you're talking about is because they switched from V to U. Digital works on both. It's not like you can only broadcast digital on UHF.

In a Q3 earnings call with investors, Sinclair did not raise confidence about a carriage resolution with Dish. When asked about the matter in today’s earnings call, Christopher Ripley, president and CEO of Sinclair Broadcast Group, said flatly, “We are in very short term renewals at this point and we don’t comment on live negotiations.” He wouldn’t elaborate beyond that.

Look at this...$446 million in revenue from advertising and a whopping $1,053 million from carriage and retrans fees. TV is no longer ad supported, it is all pay TV.

• Total advertising revenues of $446 million decreased 11% versus $500 million in the prior year period, due to the absence of political revenues, as 2021 is a non-political year. Core advertising revenues, which excludes political revenues, in the third quarter of $434 million were up 11% versus $391 million in the third quarter of 2020, due to a recovery from depressed levels in the same period a year ago caused by the pandemic.

• Distribution revenues of $1,053 million increased versus $1,003 million in the same period a year ago, due primarily to a significant decrease of distributor rebates tied to minimum game guarantees that were in the prior period's results. The gains were partially offset by dropped carriage of the Company's RSNs and subscriber churn.

Sinclair ( and other broadcasters like them) have a bunch of problems, Ad rates, do not own or produce content and the slow collapse of Traditional Providers ( Comcast, for example, just lost another 400,000 video subs in the 3rd quarter). which means less retrans and carriage fees ( or overcharge for them).

Pay Live TV, right now, is about 80 million subs, analysts are predicting subs will drop to the 50 million range in 2025, by then, companies like Sinclair will be really hurting.

It is for NBA League Pass and the out of market packages like that. All those RSN channels are on the same transponders as before - they have just be renumbered to some really high numbers. Last night I checked one of the League Pass games, specifically I had Detroit and Philadelphia on, and the Detroit feed was on transponder 14 on 110. So the League Pass packages are referring to those channels.
