CONUS HD New York Locals on 72.7?

Hello All,

I'm curious about something that I've been researching furiously here on SatelliteGuys and across the internet, but to no avail. I figured that someone here might know the answer.

I've been using satellites 119 and 110 with a "moved" address in New York, NY for the last ten years (and no, my physical address isn't in NY). The beam for 129 doesn't cover the area where I am, so I've just had to make do with what I can get (I have great signal strength on both 119 and 110, so this post isn't about that).

I was looking at the LyngSat website recently and noticed that the New York, NY locals were listed as CONUS in HD on tp32:

Dish USA on Nimiq 5 at 72.7°W - LyngSat

I have a dish that I haven't been using (I used to have it on 61.5, but the signal strength was poor, so I quit using it), so I figured "what the heck", and pointed it at 72.7 over the weekend. I'm getting good signal strengths (50) with tp32 (the main one that I was concerned about, since that is where the list has the New York HD locals). However, even after doing a "Test Installation" and updating the Guide, my Hopper 3 still only shows the NY locals in SD (and yes, the Hopper 3 is showing that 72 is now present, and I can scroll through the transponders and see the signal strengths).

I figure that this is probably due to one of several reasons:
  • The LyngSat list is wrong
  • Those channels are only available for RV users, based on this thread from over 10 years ago: New York HD Locals on Conus?
  • I have a mixed arc conflict (I've had experience in the past when mixing the two arcs that for some reason, apparently the receiver is programmed that if it thinks that a channel is supposed to be on one of the satellites, but the signal isn't strong enough to actually receive it, that even if it is coming in fine on one of the other satellites, the receiver will refuse to display the channel, and the only way to get the channel back is to remove the satellite with the poor reception. That is the reason that I had to abandon 61.5 - I lost Velocity Network - now Motortrend - and couldn't get it back until I quit looking at 61.5 - it was coming in great on 110).
  • Or of course, some other reason that I am unaware of
Does anyone have any idea as to why I'm not seeing the HD New York, NY locals, even though I have a strong signal on tp32?

I believe this is your issue. I crosschecked the channels from Lyngsat with the listing from James Long here and those channels specifically are marked as (DISH RV Distant).

How down south are you? It might be easier to get local stations from a border town like Laredo/San Diego etc.

Thank you very much for your research and reply.

I had not checked that list; that is very helpful. I had looked at the James Long site, but was hoping that since it hasn't been updated in about six months that maybe a change had been made that wasn't reflected on his lists.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, I am far too south to pick up any of the spot beams.

Quite honestly, the only time I watch the locals is for live sports (mainly NASCAR; all of the remaining Cup races this season are going to be on NBC - they were previously on USA, which I have in HD). I typically will set them up to record, and then start watching after the event has already gotten underway, with the idea that I can then fast forward through all of the commercials and catch up to live just about the time the event is ending. I also have a Roku with the NBC Sports app, so I can stream the races in HD, but I am forced to have to watch live, which just means that I'm going to be spending a good bit more of my time in front of the TV; definitely not the end of the world, just inconvenient - a trade-off considering where I get to live.

Thanks for the list. I set my account up initially (about ten years ago) with an address in New York, NY, and have never tried to change it. I've seen lots of posts here about people "moving", but I've always been so nervous about trying to do that. I'm scared that the Dish representative will say that they need to send a technician to verify my installation, which most definitely can't happen!

When I had the one dish pointed at 61.5, but was getting crappy reception, I actually had someone from Dish call me stating that they could see that I wasn't getting good reception and wanted to know if I'd like for a technician to come out and check why! I had to calmly explain that I didn't need that done and that I was happy with my service.

I'm also concerned that just as soon as I try and "move" markets, Dish will decide to move those locals to something that I can't get anymore, causing me to have to "move" again. I wonder how suspicious that would look considering I've been with the same setup for so long.

Considering that as an active, mobile, full time RV'er, I change my service address as often as daily, I don't think Dish pays a lot of attention to it these days. Even before I could change locations with the MyDish app, it was never a problem making the changes. It just took longer. The CSR's never said I needed a truck roll once I explained I had an RV and the billing address stayed the same. I know other folks sometimes just claim the move is for a summer home or similar.

As I said, some people simply claim they're temporarily moving to a summer home. I've never heard of anyone being required to have a truck roll. The CSR might ask if you need one, in which case a simple, "No", would take care of that. I think you're overthinking the issue.

Okay. Thanks for the input. I'll have to think about it to determine if it is even necessary. Like I said before, I really don't watch the locals much anyway, and I can usually just stream what I want to watch if I just can't stand to watch in SD. It would just be nice if I had locals in HD.

I don't post here often, but every time that I do, so many of you try to make a game out of guessing where I am. I find that humorous. Especially since it doesn't matter at all when it comes to answering my question. And no, I'm not going to say (because it doesn't matter).

I know all I need to know about your location. Somewhere "Warm and Southerly"... ;)

It does matter - but assuming the address on your account is correct, and you're not knowingly committing fraud (spooky locals fraud), for HD locals from New York you need orbital 61.5 transponder 22.

The service address on his account is within the NYC DMA, but his physical location is not. He can receive the NYC locals in SD on the 110 and 119 CONUS beams. There are other DMA's available in HD on CONUS beams.
