A couple questions on the Wally.

Can it be swapped in place of a VIP722k without any needed changes?

If enabled as a DVR is it possible to easily swap between the tuners?

Thanks.

As long as you are using a DPP or Hybrid dish, yes, it should be plug and play. If you are on a really old installation that uses DP or legacy equipment then you will be limited to one tuner. You can check your satellite dish model on system info (Menu > 6 > 1 > 3), and then look at the box labeled H.

Not sure what you mean here, if you are talking about watching something then changing to the secondary tuner that is recording in the background then yes, this can be done by pressing input on the remote while it is in SAT mode. Also worth mentioning, even though the Wally has two tuners it cannot operate two TVs independently like your current 722k can, it only has a single TV output. You can get creative and split said output to multiple TVs (similar to your 722’s “single” mode). Not a problem if all you want it to do is serve one TV while a different show records in the background.

Yes, the same cable that goes into the separator (or triplexer) on the back of your ViP722k can be used for a Wally instead, without any need to change anything about the dish or LNB.

To swap to the other tuner, you may press the Options button on the remote, and select TV Activity. From the TV activity screen, select the other tuner to tune to that channel. Keep in mind that the second tuner will only be used while the Wally is actually recording. Wally does not have PIP, nor does it have the ability to simultaneously buffer Live TV on two different channels. Another way to switch to the second tuner would be to simply select the recording from the DVR screen while it is in progress.

You guys both forgot to mention that any diplexer needs to be removed and the cable from the dish and from the TV need to be barreled together

Where does one buy a Wally? From DISH or a 3rd party?
Wherever its cheaper. DishForMyRV, SolidSignal, Amazon. I would avoid used sites like Ebay/CL unless you trust the seller or can get proof of the receiver being paid off beforehand.

As of right now, this Wally on Amazon is going for $60 with free shipping, and it is from Pace (company that runs DishForMyRV) so it should be trustworthy.

Patty mentioned it here :D

Yep, I forgot the diplexer, though, since I have never used that with my own ViP722k installation. I used long cables connected to the composite (yellow/red/white) TV2 outputs to run to the other room instead. I always just used the provided triplexer as a simple separator for the two satellite inputs.

Does the Wally have the same basic functions as my old DVR 625 box? In particular, does it have Preference Lists that can be customized for certain channels only?

A dumb question . . . Currently on my DVR 625 receivers we get five local channels included in the package. Will this still be the same with the Wallys or will I have to do something extra for these OTA channels?

Your 625 (loved that receiver!) is SD. The Wally is HD. So, depending upon where your locals are, you might want to realign your dish.
Thank you sir. One of our DVR 625s is 9 yrs old and the other is 13 years old -- both COMPLETELY trouble free and still working well. We've run thu a few remotes though -- the last couple I had to buy on eBay.

Some folks here railed on me for still having the old SD receivers but my wife and I don't watch that much TV -- we aren't chained to it.

Did you at least replace your old CRT TV's with a flat panel HDTV I hope?

I bought my first HDTV when I still had my 625 and two 311's. Well... Of course that started a general upgrade to a 722 and 2 612's. There is no comparison in picture quality.

Yeah, we've had Sharp 42-in HDTVs for 13 years now. Like I said, TV watching isn't as important to us as it is for most folks we know -- some we know seem to live for watching TV -- nothing else ???!!!

Does the 625 do MPEG4 video?

I think Dish is doing away with the MPEG2 satellite transmissions and switching everything to MPEG4.
