2022-23 MLB Hot Stove Discussion

Hey Red Sox fans (I know there are more than just Bill !)
Xander Bogaerts just opted Out .... from what I'm reading, the Sox rally Want him (but let him go) ... do you expect them to make a Serious offer to him to get him back ?
Or is that all talk from the Sox Management ?

I know they can always move Story over to SS, but I feel that Story is Not nearly as good defensively and think they would have a rather large drop off next year defensively at SS.

Kinda wondering if the Sox already promised Story the job when he signed originally.

From what I’ve been hearing, if Bogaerts doesn’t return the Sox will be pursuing a SS. They want to keep Story at 2B.

Oh, I like that idea better ....

Doubt they would pay for Correa though.
Keeping Story at 2b is a great idea, didn't know he was ok with it.

Do you think they really have any chance to have Bogaerts come back ?

I see Verlander Opted Out as well ....
Will he or won't he come back to the Astros ???

Houston is the perfect place for him .... not sure money is an issue for him at this point.
Going most other places isn't going to make him More.
NY or LA maybe, but thats about it ...

I would place the Bogaerts odds at 65-35 against him coming back……which is actually an improvement since August/September.

Wow!! It’s not every day see that you the defending champs parting ways with their GM.

I think that Owner Crane is Cheap (for starters) ...
I believe he offered Click a 1 year contract, after winning it all, you'd think you'd get maybe a 3 year offer ???
I think I've heard they were issues between him and the Owner ....

Click came from Tampa, which tells me that they are trying to be Cheap .... but looks like the owner is worse yet.

As a team, the Astros have paid thier guys they feel are important to them in some cases and not in others ...

They just signed Alverez this year and I think Tucker has been signed, maybe last year (?) or upcoming.

On the other side, I don't think they made much of an effort to keep Correa or Springer when they are both in thier prime.

I think the Astros are doing it the right way. They’re keeping as many of their stars that they can, and then fortifying their ML roster with good young prospects. For the most part it’s been working out for them. They’re arguably the most successful franchise over the last decade.

I don’t know what their issue is with the GM, but if he’s originally from Tampa then that makes sense. I don’t openly despise many sports franchises, but the Rays are one that I do. I wish them and that sh**box “ballpark” would go away.

I heard today that the SF Giants are VERY interested in free agent Aaron Judge. Stay tuned………….

I've heard that as well ... then they have to put thier money where thier mouth is ...
Hopefully they don't expect a Home town discount ...
I believe Judge is from the SF area.

I really like Judge ... hello Red Sox .... ain't happening, I know.
Sadly or not, IF he goes to SF, the country won't see him every week any longer.

Judge leaving would be a HUGE hole in the yankees lineup.
Personally, I think he'll stay.
Yankees tend to keep thier Stars .... Unlike the Sox of late.

After being recommended by Chaim Bloom, who worked with Click at Baseball Prospectus,[3] Click joined the Tampa Bay Rays as an intern in 2005, and the team hired him for their front office in 2006.[4] He was promoted to vice president of baseball operations in 2017.[5]

In January 2020, the Houston Astros hired Click as their general manager.[2] In 2022, the Astros won 106 games, the second-highest total in franchise history. They advanced to the World Series and defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to give Click his first career World Series championship.[6] After his contract expired after the 2022 season, Click rejected a one-year contract offer from the Astros and the team announced that they would move on without Click.[

I started reading and in the first sentence I saw, “recommended by Chaim Bloom”. Now it all makes sense.

Yep, I’d be shocked if Judge goes anywhere. He’s the kind of player that the Yankees have historically ADDED to their roster- not subtract.

For what he is asking and they keep him in pinstripes. I think that would make the Yankees the first team to be penalized for going over the cap? What a great year for him! And he stayed healthy for the first time!

Exactly, and another thing to consider- he didn’t exactly come up huge in the postseason. Granted it was a very small sample size, but the Yankees are a very result oriented organization.

I had to look up. If you spend to much in MLB. Wow, you need some deep pockets!

What happens if a MLB team goes over the luxury tax?

For 2021, it was $210 million, and teams that go over that threshold are taxed 20% of the overage during the first season they go over, 30% the second consecutive season, and 50% for each consecutive season thereafter. Teams can “reset” their rate by dropping below the threshold for a season.
