Are VIP receivers becoming obsolete?

I heard the VIP receivers are not completely obsolete yet. No new installs for VIP receivers. Existing customers who still have them are grandfathered at least for now.

I heard all older receivers (MPEG2) are becoming obsolete pretty quick.

I don't know where you heard this, but if you had been reading SatGuys for the past five years you could have read it all here.

My VIP 211k was working fine as of a few months ago. I've since then cancelled my service with Dish. I wonder if they'll let me re-activate that receiver if I ever go back.

They should let you activate vip211 series, hopefully.
