Dish Network carrying Canadian Nets.?

What is the chance of Dish Network carrying the three major Canadian Networks, CBC, CTV, and Global just as the Canadian carriers have American networks?

Any problems surely can be worked out.

If they beat Direct and cable companies to these additional channels, one could see plenty of people churning over to Dish Network and not returning to where they left.

AT180 would be a good spot for extra moves on their part.

Well, there is a restriction on USA satellite carriers carrying any foreign station which is not affiliated with a "Network".

An example of a station which does qualify is XETV, the FOX affiliate for San Diego.

Because no Canadian station would be allowed to resell their programming to a satellite distributor in the US. And that is simply because if the channel carries any US programming, the Canadian station only bought the rights for the Canadian market, not the US market.

It is the exact same reason why Bell ExpressVu and StarChoice are not sold in the US. If either company finds out you are in the US, your subscription is terminated. If you tell either company you are looking to purchase their system and install it in the US, they will not sell it to you.

ERR. BBC America, which is destributed by FOX, I believe.

The former Trio channel used to be significantly programmed with Canadian-produced programming. Then Trio got purchased by NBCUni, and it went all to hell.

It is and any and all programing originated for England must have the rights fees' paid to the the Appropriate English Network for the US Rights so that programing can be aired in the US.

In short BBC America is NOT the same network feed as ANY of the BBC networks that air in England.

CBC Canada, could develop a US only Network for sale of Canadian programing for US viewers. With that said it would NOT air the same content as the Canadian feed, as any and all US programing would have to be removed, all CBC hockey feeds would be removed. This would make a CBC US feed at the very least a marginal Niche channel at best.

I use to get (a while back on an old cable system) CNBC from St. John's (Newfoundland, Can.).

Best was their local news...

PBS here in Michigan gets some shows from CBC such as the Red Green Show...

Comcast here in the Seattle area carries CBUT, the Vancouver BC channel. It's one I can get with the QAM tuner on my Sony. I don't watch it much except during the Olympics, but I have not seen any US shows on it or advertised on it.

Ironicaly, the Dish selling own DTH service by allow to subscribe to own ethnic programs to Canada citizens, because CRTC doesn't have ability to do that.

I suppose they could put a few in as Significantly Viewed in a locals package for the border areas, but it's not likely to happen.

Very interesting. Do you know if the feed is the same as people across the border watch ?

If so, this should allow Dish Network an open door to apply for same.

If a cable company can receive a Canadian signal OTA at it's headend, then it is able to carry the channel on it's system. Which explains why border systems sometimes carry CBC, CTV, Global, TVA, SRC, etc...

Maybe Dish Network can do the same with a head end in Detroit and receive the same networks from Windsor. A distance of what, 3 - 4 miles?

There is no law that I know of that would require Dish to censor.

watch a movie on USA, TBS, TNT, etc and tell me that there is no issue with censorship

CityTV in Canada shows "Cinemax" type shows late at night...and that's on OTA TV

For the OP...CTV & Global are 99% the same shows as on the US stations during Primetime..The only things I know of that aren't are Corner Gas and Canadian Idol.

So there's no reason to carry those.....CBC if it can be picked up OTA can be carried. Thats why (as noted above) border cities can carry it. Most of NE MN has it on cable
