First off I'm not here to gloat nor bash E*. They've served me well for the past 4-5 years. They offered locals for a period time that we couldn't get from D*. But the time has come to leave.

My reason for leaving E* was simply a matter of preference and network HD availability. I'm in an area where I can't get HD networks via an OTA antenna. My locals thru E* are only available in SD(at least for now). And, E* can't give me HD DNS.

I could have paid E* to do some equipment upgrades, but the upgrades would only allow me to view the new MPEG4 offerings such as VOOM, and any FUTURE HD content. I don't care for them.

My going to D* gives me all brand new MPEG4 equipment, the standard free install, a great locked in rate, protection plan, you name it. But, the single most important factor in switching was the fact that I will now be able to get DNS HD feeds and still be able to keep my locals. When my locals do become available in HD then I can either keep my distants or drop them.

Once again, as stated previously, I'm not bashing E*. They've served me well. My decision to leave simply works out better for me.

Well, you can always "move" . I now get KC locals in HD, and they are great, but MPEG 4, so updated equipment is needed.

Yes "moving" helps you get hd locals when you can't get any at home. It works well for most of us with Dish to accomplish the same thing as going to Directv . It cost less than changing providers too. Add to the 622 your ota antenna and you get the best of both , with your real locals ota and your "moved" city's hd networks too. I have that same setup with Dish hd networks from Houston and my ota locals for Beaumont,Pt. Arthur , complete with ota guide information . Since Dish has my real area up on the satellite I get guide information for my ota locals too.

Dish has 31 hd channels and when you add the hd networks you can get up to 35channels in hd . Directv has what 8 + hd locals = 12 . But if you want to pay more to get less , go right ahead. Whether you move with Dish or go to Directv you will still get Distant hd networks with either service. With Dish the way you get your real locals if not available on the satellite , is with ota antenna- rabbit ears, clip on terk antenna or a old style 1950's antenna .

My brother chose to leave E* for D* because of a dish installation problem. He had his E* dish mounted on a pole, imbedded in concrete. They used a pole that reacted to the concrete, gradually eating away the point where the pole entered the concrete. But it wasn't a terrible install, it did take 5 years to fail.

Although my backyard pole in concrete, that I installed in 1998, looks as good as new.

Anyway once it broke off, he needed a reinstall. And he wanted it moved a few feet to avoid a tree that was coming up in his neighbor's yard. Despite having paid his bills on time for 5 years, there was a $100 charge to send someone out to fix it.

On a whim, he called D* to see what it would cost to switch over and have them install a new pole. They set it all up and gave him a new receiver for free.

He had no qualms about staying with E*, was happy with the service and price. But saw no reason to pay them $100 for something that D* would do for nothing. So he switched.

No HD locals in my area, not thru E* nor OTA. Can't get HD DNS thru E*. Not willing to pay for upgrades to recieve the HD's that are available thru E*; don't care about VOOM.

ONLY way to get network HD's is thru satellite...something E* could NOT do for me, and D* CAN!!! It just works out better for me.

Yep, he could lie and tell E* that he moved so he could get out of market stations in HD but maybe he doesn't feel like not being truthful. With all the folks talking on the site about how they're "moving" on E* to get out of market programming maybe the NAB will take Charlie to court for allowing that loop hole to happen?

Update:

Well, I was scheduled for my D* install today, but as luck has it, the installer was 4 hours late. When he did finally show up, he promptly pulled out his SAT locator tool thinga ma jiggy and quickly determined that I wasn't going to be able to get all the necessary satellites in order to carry out my plan.

So, in short I'm still with E*!!! Called D*, canceled my order and am being refunded all fees.

Oh well.

So let me get this straight I call E*, pay for all my equipment upgrades, & choose one of the new packages. They send someone out to install all the equipment, switches and such, including the second dish for 61.5 (can't get 129 in new england). Then after everything is all hooked up, call E* back and change my service address? But keep my billing address?

What do I tell them is my new service address?

Say you want New York as your SERVICE address .

1. You do a google search for movie theaters in New York. Pick a real address from that search and then add a fictious apartment number to the end. Then plug it into the locals address broker on dishnetwork's website. If it says you qualify for New York locals you are good for a "move".

2. Then after the installer does the install and you get all setup for equipment and everything is good, wait till the next day and call Dish. Tell them that you have "moved" to the new SERVICE address that you found on the google search complete with an apartment number. ( Tell the csr that you already did your own satellite installation and you have the two dishs ;dish500 and a side sat dish to 61.5) Tell them to keep your BILLING address what it really is and your phone number the same as is. Then say you want New York locals. The csr turns on the New York locals and you should be able to get the HD locals for the big 4 networks on the 61/5 sat. Sd ones will be there if you are within spotbeam range for them on 110 or 119 sat , which ever one they are on.

3. Disclaimer** IF you need to get any kind of service to your sat dish or if you need to replace a receiver due to failure etc, you will have to call Dish and "move" back to your real address to receive service by a tech. Otherwise they will know you lied and you will lose your hd locals. You can get them to ship any receiver , remote control etc to your BILLING ADDRESS if you SPECIFY as much to them. But make sure that they read it back to you as you have requested. **I have done this and have had no problems in 4 years.

The law says that the sat companies can not "knowingly" sell you locals from outside your dma. The key word is KNOWINGLY. IF you don't tell them the truth they won't ask as long as you pay your bill. It also helps to have your bill on credit card autopay . No mistakes that way on billing either.I have "moved" several times in 4 years into two different states and Dish doens't care as long as you pay your bill. The chances of you getting found out are low unless you screwup and tell them what you are really doing.

Every person on here gets to choose how to live their life. As tempting as it may be to exercise the loophole, my character is more important to me.

I feel the same way. While it may be tempting...I just can't justify the act. I guess what I'll end up doing is just upgrading my equipment with any and all rebates that I CAN get from E* including the second dish for 61.5 and installation. Then just play the waiting game in order to get networks in HD.:

I hate it, but I'd rather play by the rules.
