A friend of mine says he's spoken to someone at Dish named Les Harper and they said the external drive function will not be active until sometime in 2008? Wasn't this promised long ago?

External recording was promised "sometime mid-year" at CES in January. The basic holdup was getting legal stuff straightened out with the content providers.
Scott has had reports from beta testers already so I really doubt it will be pushed back until 2008. Of course it has already been about 2 years since they first started working on the idea

Les Harper here. I may lose my job for saying this but I can confirm that 2008 WILL BE...the next year that comes around on the calendar. Some people may have different information but your friend Les wants you to rest easy: as soon as 2007 ends, 2008 will be there.

And she would not say that, I know Leslie well. She is very protective and speaks by the company line about things.
As of last update I have received the external storage was still on track for release this summer.
I know a number of beta testers who have been using it and I get updates from them when new updates have been made.

They could have said 2007 but then Hollywood could have demanded more and negotiations went back to square one. Wouldnt be the first time something like that has happened. Remember these are the guys who were dragged kicking and screaming into accepting DVDR9 going on the market.
