I got $20 that says Charlie makes a quick call to Legal and that judgment is magically reversed on the other side of the continent, and he gets to collect court costs.
I have $20 more that says that judge's TV will be out for the next month.

While I am happy to see the little guy win, I also believe that there is more to this story then whats written here.
If I had to guess I would say that this customer did not honor his commitment and tried getting out of his contract early, when he did this Dish tried charging him an early termination fee to which he refused to pay and thus the sent him to collections. I suspect the refunds he is talking about where rebates Dish Sent him becuase of a sign up promotion.
This guy won because some local guy from Dish showed up at court with no idea of what was going on, but I suspect if he would have been properly updated on what was up the customer would have probably lost this case for not honoring his commitment.
I call this one legal roulette in which the player won.

Charlie plays legal roulette all the time.
He has won some, and lost some.
Remember the Tivo lawsuit and countersuit, how about the Distant Networks case.

I remember Charlie Ergen saying he would spend $100,000 to defend a $10,000 lawsuit because of principal.
This guy who sued is going to piss off someone in Echostars legal department with this news article and I bet any money now Echostar will go back and sue the guy for the money he still owes DISH Network.
By the time Echostars lawyers are done reaming this guy a new a$$hole he will be sorry he sued them!

You are right there. The Echostar lawyers have really taken a beating in the last 24-36 months. (Gemstar settlement, Tivo lawsuit, DNS)
Yep those echostar lawyers got off lucky on this one!!!! I don't think they will be going after this guy, he'd be the one ripping new ones.
Actually, Echostar won the Gemstar trial (unless there was a second one of which I am unaware). An appeals court ruled that, due to some errors made by the judge of the original trial, Gemstar and Echostar would have to start from square one with a new trial. It was just a few weeks after that ruling that Gemstar and Echostar announced a settlement. That settlement, I belive was pretty good for both parties. Keep in mind at the same time Gemstar was also suing Charter Cable and another huge cable company (Comcast or Cablevision, I think; I can't recall which) claiming the same patent infringement regarding the on screen guide. Although with Echostar, Gemstar claimed that Dish had imported the technology from outside the U.S. as a slick trick.
Please, Direct TV and the cable companies are in court and being sued just as often as Dish. It is just that Dish has the face and personality of Charlie Ergen to go along with it that gets in more of the mainstream media. I do believe Direct TV is being sued over patent infringement relating to its supposed very own proprietary DSS. I don't know the outcome of that one. Will all this lawyering never end?
