ALL VOOM TO GO MPEG4 AUGUST 15th

And if the native capture is 1440x1080 (for the digital camera based channels) are we losing anything?

Probably not much, but the channels originate at 1920x1080, then are reduced to 1440 and scaled back up by receiver to 1920. So many conversions will cause loss of quality. Also most new stuff is shot with HDCAM-SR or 1080p cameras that provide full 1920 resolution.

Yeah again depends on the Network how they produce things they dont all use the same equipment so it will differ from show to show.

I watched some RUSH HD, Gallery HD, and HDNews around 11 AM to see improvements in PQ since they are now in MPEG4. They looked a lot better to me. RUSH HD showed a lot more detail. The sports highlights on HDNews were sharper with more detail.

I noticed last night on Science Channel HD they were using a few Sony HC3 HDV handheld camera in a remote location to shoot a documentry and thoses are 1440x1080.

I don't care about the resolution but theses companies can't use 100K cameras out in the middle of the desert with all the sand and run the risk of breaking them, they are smart use a cameras around $1,100 thoses are easier and cheaper to replace. I sure one day they bump up their field equipment, even the Sony FX HDV models are cheap if they wanted to use thoses.

Given that the focus ring and the zoom control are just about the only moving part left on a camera, I don't think a little sand is going to kill the whole camera.

Is there talk of when E* plans on changing all of their HD channels to 1920x1080? Are there any that meet this criteria now?

The vast majority of digital video cameras in use today have 1440x1080 CCDs right? It will be a while (read that as a few years) before we see more video camera content that actually delivers on 1920x1080 in any significant quantity.

Then it becomes a question of do you use the bandwidth to do the unsqueeze ahead of transmission or to have the receiver do the unsqueeze?

This doesn't hold true for film originated material or digital movie cameras.

I'm not against full resolution but if the source isn't full resolution it's really an argument over who's going to do the anamorphic processing.

Cheers,

No, as John said in the post above, most Voom was created in 1440x1080, not 1920x1080. No point in making them 1920 if there's only 1440 data, unless you think your TV would do a bad job of 1440 to 1920.
