Ads in posts.

I wasn't going to say anything because I know having some kind of sponsorship is necessary. However the new ads in posts are too big. We have one or 2 line posts that take up an unnecessary amount of screen real estate because a big ol' ad gets plunked into them.

AND..... if that's not enough.... the ads aren't local to the web server... right? Because several times today I've been reading along fine and when changing threads or trying to post a reply, the whole shebang hangs on getting data from a host that's NOT satelliteguys.us.

Hangs to the point where I have to close the browser window (or tab in this case) and start over.

I would never begrudge you having ads. The ones inside the posts are annoying. But when tehy stop me from reading the message boards.... that's kind of counter-productive.... don't you think?

FWIW, I have written and run web sites since before there were pictures on the web. And I still maintain a personal site with message boards. So I do understand the need for teh ads, but wonder if it could be implemented differently.

The ads have been there for over 3 years now. Where have you been? :)

Become a Pub Member, it helps us keep the lights on for all, plus it speeds up the page loading times GREATLY, since it is no longer downloading ads from various agencys.

Am I really just noticing them? I guess they didn't bother me until they stopped pages from loading. And I will definitely look at teh PUB thing.... lord knows I spend enough time here. I should be helping pay the bills :)

I have also commented on the recent throughput of the external adds.
(The blank page space doesn't bother me nearly as much as large sigs [some with pix] and animated avatars.)

I have seen posts on other forums by people sent to this site, who had a bad experience with the adverts, possibly due to them not being members.

That is one flaky site. I got forced Sun ads when selecting the pdf. Signing up didn't help either. Maybe Scott can post his info on a professional site, like the yahoo board, eh?
Having read some similar complaint threads here, I cannot defend the SatGuys forum, and I would really like to.

Neither problem seems to be taken seriously.
The only answer seems to be: pay money.

When I had DirecTV previously I came to this board a lot. Since I've gotten it reinstalled now that we'ved moved someplace I can get it again I've resumed my mostly-lurking but sometimes posting in the HD/BD forums from time to time.

I've been meaning to become a pub member for quite a while, one thing or another preventing me from doing so for whatever reason.

However, ever since ads have appeared IN posts, often I find that after posting I end up on a blank white page with half of a javascript statement and a large square ad staring at me.

I am all for advertising and even click on them from time to time, but when it dissuades me from posting, it discourages me from even visiting, which once I don't miss the forum as much and start browsing alternatives also discourages me from getting a pub membership.

Of course, by posting this I am demonstrating that I do still enjoy browsing the forum, even if it is not as often as it once was :)

So in short, pay up! I will eventually myself, even if only to support the efforts that made it such an enjoyable place when I was able to post and browse more often.

Ain't FF with Adblocker great. It helps "tame" many sites. Not just ads, but other things as mentioned below.

Before becoming a pub member, I never saw any ads, just blank space. Of course, I was using Firefox with Adblocker and NoScript.

The large sigs is another issue. I've seen mboard where the sigs is 10 metres (ok, I'm exaggerating), especially on parenting boards where they have 10 photos of their kids in their sig.for a one line post. I've tweaked adblocker to knock those out.

There was a thread on another board awhile back saying this site had one of the highest ad factor of most any boards out there. They didn't say if they were viewing as a guest or a member, as some ads are nuked if you're a member and more if you are premie member.

Someone PMed me the other day about becoming a Pub Premie member due to one of my earlier posts, I actually tried. Probably the last day it was offered as a "Founding Member" membership. In the middle of the transaction I lost power (Some drunk probably plowed a pole) and the deal never finished. It was at night and I gave up waiting for the power to return and thought I try later. When I did try a couple of days later, the membership was changed to a yearly level at a different price, kinda frustrating. Regardless I do understand the ads and the premie levels help pay for the food to feed the server the site sits on...

Supporting founders are folks who donated to the site before there was a set donation amount. Some folks donated $2, some $10... some $200 whatever they did was up to them.

They are the folks who helped us get off the ground, and without them we would not be here. We called these folks founding supporters, as they helped found SatelliteGuys. :)

Back then we had no sponsors, no advertising, and its because of these folks kindness that we are able to be here today.

At $20 PER YEAR, supporting the site is easy and cheap. What is it, the price of a new DVD, or a couple trips to Starbucks?

And the ads - except for the gold sponsor one at the top of the screen, magically go away. :)

Thanks to a drunk or whatever hit the power pole to make me miss the "window."

Aww, I must have missed the founding supporter stuff, that's disappointing.

I'd think that'd be done by different factors like date of registration, not for marketing.

That's what I remembered...

To me, Starbucks is like Mon$ter cable, overpriced and funny names for different sizes. FireFox with it's toys already helps nuke most of the ads, although I don't let it touch the gold sponsers on the top. Mainly so my screen reader don't crash and burn as some of the ad scripts clash with it. But I'm giving the premie level consideration...
