The stock remote that came with it is a rc23 / sometimes. Call DTV and order an RF remote = they are 20/30$ but its worth it. Also make sure the RF code matches the last 6 digits of your RID number/ You can buy the remote on ebay as well, its called the RC24 remote

Personally i suggest Reformat / then force download usually that will fix alot of crap. And getting in to the HD internally is possible...its not legal but its possible.

With directv - You need an off air att. I dont know about dish, i also know you can prolly get a DNS waiver. if you dont know what that is, its a Distant network. Im hoping a rep from Dish jumps in this comment at anytime.
