Forget digital extraction of shows from the 921. Just get yourself a WinPVR 250 card for your PC and connect the 921 to it using a S-video and RCA stereo audio cable.

Unsold 921's are a bad omen for a receiver as heavily anticipated, and overbid on Ebay until just a few months ago. I am aghast at the patched state of my 921 (hardware timer daily reboot is essential because the L186 auto-reboot patch doesn't even work).

Out sourcing of complex product development has always been a problem for the consumer electronics industry but most large companies figured that out long ago and fixed the issue by having an American centric development team to specify and test a product before release. E* has yet to learn...

I don't think people have given up on getting a 921. But the massive 921 timer problems reported here and elsewhere could have put some people off until they get the software stabilized.

My 921 was working (more or less) from early January until recently, ie L184 when all hell broke loose, missed timers, re-labelled timers, etc requiring frequent re-boots and timer re-entry. In its current condition it is virtually useless. After all the reason we have a PVR is to save time...

At L184 we are still seeing masses of timers either not firing or being mis-labelled. These problems are not 'latent defects' - they are easily reproducible and are being reported by dozens on this and other forums, and we have gone through a number of software upgrades so they are not...

You forgot the most important test phase for a mass market consumer electronics product with complex software - beta test. The more complex the product (especially GUI features), the more beta testers and longer beta test period are required. Dish's product development process is still immature...

Dishnetwork is a national outfit and has little to gain by acting heroically in locally isolated disasters. Whereas the local cable company has a lot to gain via free PR on the local news.

'without the national HD feeds, this will be a problem" If I were Charlie I would sell out now. Congress will never give him HD network feeds.

I predict lots of HD shopping channels and reality TV shows.

Just the opposite. My brother in law has digital cable a 100" screen and his SD stations have no evidence of overcompression and artifacting unlike Dish on my 100" screen which looks horrible.
