What "normal" cable system do you mean? This isn't the 80s where every town had their own cable company, they are all run by big conglomerates now. Comcast has more than double the amount of TV customers that Dish does, and Charter and Cox aren't far behind. Source.

Comcast. It's far from perfect, but I have internet through them so I can bundle and save some money, and at least they have all the channels I want. I'd love to "cut the cord" (I put it in quotes because going to a streaming service like Sling or YTTV is just cable by another method), but...

I'm sure the truth is in the middle, like it usually is. But the way I look at it, Dish now has open disputes with HBO (Time Warner), the Fox RSNs (Sinclair), NFL Network (NFL), and now various locals (Scripps). The common denominator with all four of those disputes is Dish. I know everyone...

I'm on record as not being happy with Dish's PQ. Especially on darker scenes, there's so much macroblocking it can be hard to tell what's going on. We switched from DirecTV a year ago, and Dish's PQ is a bit worse. But where we really see the difference is on streaming. With a good internet...

Same here. I'd never have satellite service of any kind without OTA to supplement it. I even bought a used AM21 on eBay when I had DirecTV.

IMO, there are no "good or bad" guys among the channel owners or the service providers. They are all trying to maximize their own profits, which is fine, of course. And I don't envy Dish, either. They have much less leverage in this situation. If their customers decide they want the Fox channels...

According to this report, Fox offered to keep the channels on during negotiation, and Saint Dish refused. It's not that simple, and you know it. Many of us are under contract and would have to pay a substantial sum to leave. Look, we all have to weigh the pros and cons of different providers...

I don't see why you'd need more than one. And besides, you can switch whenever you want, since there are no long-term contracts or installation.

Please. It's not like both sides didn't know this was coming, of course they were going to want to put their side out there. I don't get why Dish gets a free pass from so many on this forum over these disputes. It takes two to tango. We get told that Fox wants to charge an unreasonable amount...

IMO, stuff like this is just going to accelerate the cord-cutting trend.

I applaud Dish for trying to fight to keep carriage fees down, but at the end of the day, I'm going to choose a provider that gives me the channels I want, and losing Fox Sports Detroit is a big one for me. I can live without HBO by getting it on streaming, but I watch the Tigers, Wings, and...

Planet Earth 2 on ultra Blu-Ray is pretty "knock you out", IMO. That's my go-to for showing off my 4K TV. :) IMO, it's the compression. I haven't been too impressed with 4K on Dish, either. 4K streaming on things like Netflix looks a lot better.

I actually prefer HBO through Amazon Prime to the overcompressed mess I got from Dish. The picture quality is outstanding.
