Screen window mesh what types can be used? I seen fiberglass and plastics at the store the other day.

I assume you mean to repair or fashion a dish reflector????

Are you remodeling?

If you are using for reflecting the signal, you need aluminum screening. The other stuff will pass it or absorb it, either way not what you want.

Michael I was wondering about making my own dish.
Well I saw a guy make a 6 footer one time out of PVC pipe and rolls of screen back in the analog days. It worked -- not really great but he got sick and never perfected it.
So I don't know how good it would have been. Main problem I saw was he didn't have enough supporting "ribs" since he was using such a soft material and had no plans to try and cast it in Fiberglass.

When I lived in Florida, I wanted to mount an LNB above our lanai to see if I could receive satellite signals, but never got a chance to try before we moved.

Pop Sci or Radio Electronics, BITD, had plans, Don't know if I have the mag in the museum or not.

If this works out I'd consider trying it. Regular mesh is expensive. Anyway, wasn't this the kind of mesh on that sat phone setup in those Segal movies?

Other than doing this for the joy of accomplishing something difficult, it would be better to put the effort into simply finding a dish that nobody wants. In Toronto, Ku-band dishes are almost "given away" in stores, and C-band dishes are plentiful in the used ads if you watch.

It's too bad that no one picked up the ball and kept home subs available (not that HITS junk). It might have kept 12 foot BUD's from becoming so expensive - there are some "cheap" new 12 footers (under $1000) but the ones I've found require a 4.5 in diameter pole. Anyway, I don't like the idea of looking for used dishes. From what I've seen, there isn't enough FTA Ku stuff available. I'd like to get rid of the BUD but it's unlikely we'll see the stuff on C-band moved to Ku, IMHO.

Scott should hold a contest to see who can build a custom dish out of something unusual such as a trash can lid, round sled, window screen, etc. :) I have a notebook with plans on building a wooden dish, but like most of my ideas, I never had time to actually build the wooden dish.

I once saw in Popular Mechanics plans on building a flat satellite dish out of chicken wire and 2x4's.

Popcorn it should be ku and c band build one for each category under a certain dollar amount. Best camouflage dish.
