Hopper + HWS and the 3TB limit (Tech discussion)

Thinking out loud here... The keys don't need to be on the external at all. The encryption could be upstream of the write. The drive would just be a bucket of bits. Most efficient would be a cryptochip/ASIC or an FPU to do encryption chores. The datastreams aren't particularly intensive...

Hopper + HWS and the 3TB limit (Tech discussion)

I haven't gone hunting for keys... Yet. I'm just moving data around. The 2TB partition isn't directly accessed. It is the extended partition that contains the additional space beyond the first TB. The space is accessed through logical partitions 5-8. As many as are needed to use all the...

Hopper + HWS and the 3TB limit (Tech discussion)

I've been working on a move from 2TB to 3.0TB drive over the weekend and thought I'd discuss this topic. Now that I've "walked a mile in their shoes" I understand why drives are limited to 3TB. I don't understand why they chose to take this path to get to where they are, but that's another...

    Home Media Server

I use a Synology 5 bay NAS with 5tb drives for the simplicity of management. I spend enough time wrangling about 100ish servers and 600ish OS Instances that I want to spend very little time on this. I have > 400 Blu-ray disks ripped and just upgraded from 3TB disks around May. I also have...

    iMac with Retina Display

A half a day is forever on this type of hyperscale solution. For four nines (99.99%) you get 1 second of unscheduled outages for about every 3 hours or less than 1 hour a year. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

Is surround sound for music and home theater on its way out?

The fewer the tracks the easier it can be. But there's a reason the best are the best, and it isn't because its easy to do. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

    Raspberry PI 2

I'll probably replace mine. I use it as an appliance for caching DNS and DHCP services I don't need it, but might do more on it with more speed. And it'll be about $60/with a case and an SD card. Scott is it SD or microSD. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

Message app that will let you delete people from a group

Maybe try HandCent SMS. I don't know if it can do this or not, but I strongly preferred it over the stock Samsung apps. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

Is surround sound for music and home theater on its way out?

Harshness: It is "trivial" to do a stereo mix but decidedly non-trivial to do a good or great one. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

Is surround sound for music and home theater on its way out?

No more or less so than synthesizing a stereo mix. Put another way there is no there there. It's all an artificial construct since its likely that no two musicians were recording at the same time. They might not have been in the same studio for that matter. So which artificial reality is...

    Nexus 6: The wait begins

Neither is a bad choice. If the larger and higher resolution screen isn't appealing save yourself a few $$.

    Nexus 6: The wait begins

I'm just past the two week mark and loving the N6. Still getting used to its idiosyncrasies but that's true of any phone. I can tell now when the time comes for this beast to go I'll be looking for another Nexus or Pure Android device. Lollipop's biggest issue is taming the notifications...

    Nexus 6: The wait begins

Performance issue seems to be resolved. Looks like there was an issue with the channel in use. Results are much better now on AC Internal 226+ down / 102+ up External 110+ down / 5- down. Attached is the homework :)

    Tapatalk extensions down?

It is at this point specific to SG, all the others are working. That's why I was asking. Thanks for the info :-)

    Tapatalk extensions down?

I'm not sure of the mechanics, but none of my Tapatalk subscription type stuff (subscribed forums for example) hasn't been available for several days. Anyone else?

    Nexus 6: The wait begins

Okay, one thing that isn't up to par is the 802.11ac performance. It's terrible. I am not sure at this point whether it is the WAP or the phone as this is my first 802.11ac device. I'll do some more extensive testing tomorrow night to track down the problem. Speedtest gets: 91+/5mbit on...

    Nexus 6: The wait begins

There's a hack to make this work. You put a nano-SIM into another phone that's in the Verizon whitelist, then you provision that SIM to the number you want. Then you take the SIM and put it into the Nexus 6. I didn't want to do that dance. You can also manually (or with a SIM cutter) cut down...

    Nexus 6: The wait begins

Because the IMEI wasn't in their whitelist database. I've been looking to leave Verizon, and this was the push I needed for the first line.

    Nexus 6: The wait begins

Verizon steadfastly refused to activate and I won't jump through the hoops with activating the SIM on another phone and giving an inaccurate IEMI. So Verizon lost me to T-Mobile today.
