First Look: Dish Network's DTVPal Digital Converter

This is true in that HD broadcasts are softened. SD is relatively untampered. With my limitations in equipment, exact frames may be hard. I may opt for similar images: ie, the same two news anchors in the same shot a minute apart.

To me, the DTVPal is MUCH softer than my DTT900. Maybe I'll use an old tuner card to take some head-to-head screenshots.

Alright. So as asked. I've taken apart the DTVPal. I did the best I could with what I had, at the moment. >> PHOTO ONE The DTVPal. >> PHOTO TWO On the back of the DTVPal, between the RF connectors on the left and the audio connectors, and to the right of the composite connector, you will see...

I'm resizing photos as we speak. Will have them up in 15 or so.

I've concluded that I am not a fan of the DTVPal. It's picture quality is too difficult to ignore. I will be going back to the Zenith DTT900/901. The good news means that if it's still needed, I can open her up :)

Malouff: I know you're right on that. I may have to take one for the team. As soon as I can find time when the family won't need the box (maybe early next week) I might consider opening it and taking photos to give any hacks or analysis a head start.

Haha. Should have seen that coming. Since the family relies on this box, and I don't have the cash for a new DTT900 in case I do something stupid, no. BUT...but... If I ever do crack it open - maybe feeling adventurous or there's promise that there is a hardware hack - you have my word I'll...

First Look: Dish Network's DTVPal Digital Converter

This is the smooth picture I've noted in my prior posts. I'm using the DTVPal with a JVC I'Art set from the early 2000s and composite cables, and the softness is rediculously noticable (and nervewracking). While I love the audio quality and the guide on the DTVPal, the video is paling in...

That's an extra good point, pabeader. I'm starting to notice that as well. Partially. I over simplified my feelings a little, so I'll give you that it does sound stupid. Just simply, over poor downscaling, I do prefer an aliased look. It's really not a problem and really not distorted until...

I too got mine. Um. Kind of interesting issue with it. Overall I'm sort of pleased. The guide is nice, the timers work, etc. But it smooths out the picture considerably which I -am not- a fan of. I kind of prefer the jagged edges of a scaled down video, which reminds me how high quality the...

First Look: Dish Network's DTVPal Digital Converter

I didn't come across this looking through the thread, but maybe I overlooked it: With all this talk about the TR-40 being a different product, can anyone explain to me why it is that the PDF manual for the DTVPal has the heading tr40.book?

DTVPal.com is now taking orders and accepting the government coupons. 34 dollars roughly, with the coupon and all charges considered.

New guy, been lurking and following this thread for a week or so now trying to pinpoint the movement of the box with the rest of you. Scott was right, DishStore.net has them in stock for 59.99, no coupon applicable. SolidSignal has removed their preorder label, so I assume they're instock...
