ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

My understanding is F2 is supposed to be viable for some channels until February 27 with Dual Feeds on going. I may be splitting hairs here with only one day to go, but it will be interesting if they really switch them off as stated. Shaw Broadcast Services Charts

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

It's all done in software in the background that you don't see. Shaw has been turning off 6xx series boxes for weeks (according to another Site I frequent). We moved everything to 8xx boxes last summer in anticipation of an earlier demise of F2. So save the PSU, and recycle the rest after yours...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

I was going to update again after G1 becomes the sole channel provider when F2 goes dark in about a week. But I'm a bit early, as my neighbor decided to follow my new connection instructions earlier than he had told me yesterday. He switched one of the F2 feeds to the open G1 Vertical (13v/0...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Well that may be the case but our situation is a bit different than "normal". We have Shaw Direct at our seasonal Family Cabin at a Lake in BC surrounded by mountains which we installed over a decade ago ourselves as it was far outside the coverage area Shaw provided installation support for...

Thanks nelson. I'm surprised Shaw Direct has been so cryptic about this with their Customers.

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

So if I'm understanding this correctly, fundamentally you just need to subscribe to a paid steaming service of your choice, and set it up to stream to a Computer (say a NUC - which I have just happen to have to play around with, or really any PC I have hanging about) behind your home Router...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Rogers (who recently bought Shaw) has stopped their distributors from selling any receivers as they look to rent them to gain more control and revenue over time. More channel changes are coming on July 4th, and I expect F2 will be useless for most folks by year end.

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Any idea when this Bird becomes useless for Shaw Direct's purposes?

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Since I posted above, I've gotten similar info. The move to the HEVC Codec forces all Customers to Shaw's current (but old!) 800 or 830 receivers. The 6xx receivers cannot do HEVC, and all channels will be HEVC on G1 when the migration to that single Bird is complete. We've moved to all 8xx...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Yes, but my hope is we won't have any ingress this spring on the remaining cables, as we really sealed them up well (fingers crossed!) and replacement won't have to occur. I already have a 900 foot box of Quad Shield RG6 at the Cabin - just in case.

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

I'm looking to the bright side now. Going to one Bird will help us & our neighbor at our Cabin in the interion of BC. We run 4 buried cables in conduit about 300 feet from the dish to a multiswitch at the Cabin (with 4 cables going onto the neighbors' from there about 250 feet away. When...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Hi Gents, any predictions when Shaw Direct will have to move off this Bird? They have been closed lips on it so far.
  15. -Jim-

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Yes, going to the HEVC codec gives them the ability to squeeze all of their channels onto G1 as the programming takes approximately half as much room as old MPEG-4 it is replacing. I expect they'll move channels in transponder groups. Probably starting in early Spring 2023 - but I'm just guessing.

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

I agree Shaw Direct would like to keep all their Snowbirds as Customers, but the reality is forces beyond their control won't allow it. I expect quite a few Customers may find other suppliers both in the Southern Provinces, and at home. It's just a commercial reality. I was surprised Shaw...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

It's really about changing to DVB-S QPSK modulation. (But I have read somewhere it does save power.) As per Shaw Direct: "changing the modulation scheme to DVB-S QPSK, 2/3 FEC on Anik F2 would, barring any degradation of Anik F2 beyond that currently anticipated by Telesat, increase the period...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Yes, you have it mostly correct. Moving the channels allowed for the Satellite to save power. The modulation change supposedly allow the bird to drift more before a need of correction, as the signal strength from each transponder using DVB-S QPSK is approximately 10% higher than with the old...

ANIK F2 - Thy End Is Near

Glad to see our Snowbird friends are still able to see their Canadian TV. (Although watching Canucks Games anywhere is really painful these days!) Early on in this drama (last September) there was real panic for those subscribers who only had 6xx series receivers, as it appeared Shaw...

    Anik F-2

HEVC is the next generation compression standard that offers a number of enhancements over AVC. HEVC compression is 50% more efficient than AVC, which translates into maintaining the same video quality at half the bitrate or double the video quality at the same bitrate. The only way Shaw Direct...

    Anik F-2

Hi Gents, Shaw Direct (SD) has begun migrating all it's Customers off Anik F2 due to it's failure to maintain the optimal orbit due to it running out of fuel prematurely based on it's schedule from earlier this year. When F2 is placed in inclined orbit, small dishes are not expected to be able...

LNB Power With >250' Cable Feed

Hi Michael, Unfortunately I never had the time / tools to figure it out. (There's always something else to do there in the Summer. :D:D) It's quite a bizarre problem. IMHO there is probably a drywall nail piercing the cable and partially shorting the conductors. It's the cable from the Media...

LNB Power With >250' Cable Feed

Hi again Sparkolas, Yes it is a long thread to read but everything was researched in depth and recorded. So there's no bull - just the facts with real data and photos. The Dual Shield RG6 Copper Clad Steel Core works absolutely fine. The proof is in the final results. Quad Core would be...

Hi Sparkolas, I've been down this same road so check this out as a decent reference. (It's even farther => there's photos too!) I started out as a technically competent noob as well. http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=125300 For Shaw Direct any decent RG6 Quad Shield Copper...

a couple of quick Shaw Direct questions

I use Channel 299 to tune the Dish with the older style LNBs (Non- Xku Type.) and then use Channel 700 when I'm ready to fine tune it.
