AT&T loses 620,000 video subs in Q1 as DirecTV deal moves ahead

By the time we started seeing cable-specific programming, cable was well into middle age; the cable industry was young back in the early '50s. My dad worked on the first cable system in Western Canada way back in 1953...

    Genie box question

I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with our DirecTV boxes. We have an H44-500 Genie in the living room, and a C41-700 mini-Genie in the den. My wife complains that the closed captioning in the living room does not work well. So, I wanted to swap the 2 boxes to see if the issue is a box problem...

using my receiver at my cabin 100 miles away

With an RV it's pretty simple: once we are level, and the slideouts are out, I just press one more button and the dome works its magic - within minutes it finds the correct satellite and we're watching TV! I suspect that might change when DirecTV finally does away with its SD signals - I'll most...

using my receiver at my cabin 100 miles away

Other than the possible loss of your local channels there should be no problems. We take our 2 receivers from the house every time we go out in our RV - the receivers have worked everywhere from coast to coast and border to border, including up into Canada.

What will happen to Directv going forward

It seems the emphasis is on people who have a steady, full-time broadband capability - which usually means a hard-wired connection of some type. But there is a relatively large number of users out there who rely on a cell signal for their internet connection. A lot of those people are mobile...

Thanks for clarifying that - we are, indeed, going to have to upgrade to either the WineGard Trav'ler or the RFMogul dish. Both are open-dish units, and both are about the same price - I've heard stories that RFMogul is easier to repair on-site but we'll make that decision in probably 6 months...

What I've heard over the years is that if you have 2 receivers connected to a single dish both receivers can only receive a signal from the same satellite - presumably because the dish can't switch between satellites without interrupting the signal. Is that no longer true?

I know we can't predict what the cost will be 2 years hence, but to make an informed comparison I can certainly use today's non-contract pricing for each package, to compare Dish to DirecTV. That's what I'm trying to do...

Greetings - we have been DirecTV subscribers for about 25 years now, but we're starting to investigate the possibility of switching to Dish. Our current setup is as follows: we have a Genie master receiver in our living room, and a Genie slave in the den. This gives us HD channels on each TV -...
