    Bye-bye Dish Network

Update Bad form to resurrect a thread, but I thought it would be good to offer an update. We've had nothing but Netflix since the end of September. So far, it has been very good. The kids watch shows off Netflix that we are more or less comfortable with: Fat Albert, Pink Panther cartoons...

    Bye-bye Dish Network

We drank the iPhone kool aid. Trust me, the kids are getting plenty of trigger time with Angry Birds, etc. For the record, we have a cable modem, and our ISP nominally delivers 10 mbps down, but the best I've ever seen on a speed test is around 7 mbps down. At the moment Netflix is using about...

    Bye-bye Dish Network

After subscribing to Dish for nearly ten years, we cancelled our subscription and shipped our DVR/receiver back to them. They should be getting the final check (to cover the shipping) today or tomorrow. We replaced our Dish subscription with a Roku box and we have not missed it. The kids are...

    Dish Earth Channel

The moon can be seen from time to time on the channel, but it does not look as you would expect. The satellite is about 22000 miles from the earth, and the moon-- when it is visible-- is another 240,000 beyond the earth, give or take. The moon is small when you can see it, and there is not a lot...

    Unplugged Dish today

Dunno what VOOM is/was, but the one thing that gave me pause when I considered switching to DirecTV was the proliferation of antennas on my roof. Had a Dish dish up there, and far as I know, the DirecTV installer would just leave it there, and even worse, drill a new set of holes in my roof for...

VIP 722 vs. TiVo Series 2 DVR

You guys are smart, and I really appreciate the tip in re: intelligent searching. Regarding the search with TiVo/program with laptop strategy, do you achieve this by logging in to your Dish account via the laptop? BTW another dumb question while I have your attention: the channel with the...

VIP 722 vs. TiVo Series 2 DVR

We upgraded the HDD to a 400GB drive after 18 months or so. The upgrade requires some tech skilz-- namely a PC booting from a special Linux OS on a CD-- which a friend of mine provided. My only complaint regarding my TiVo was that it seemed to slow down a bit after the HDD upgrade.

VIP 722 vs. TiVo Series 2 DVR

We had a TiVo series 2 DVR for about 3 years before switching to a Dish VIP 722. I don't watch a lot of TV, but after using the Dish DVR for 8 months, I'm wondering about one thing. Is there a smart way to use the Dish DVR to search the listings? For example, say I got a wild hair and wanted...

What is the best way to hook my internet connection up to my VIP722 HD DVR receiver??

Throw in my own $0.02 We have a VIP 722 that connects to the Internet via a pair of bridged wireless access points (WAPs). You can read about the setup here: http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-network-forum/170939-connecting-vip722-using-wireless-network.html This has been working for four...

    Connecting VIP722 Using Wireless Network

In case someone else wants to know... Following are the instructions that NetGear sent me to enable my VIP 722 to connect to the Internet via two bridged NetGear WG602 WAPs, just in case they may be of use to anyone else. I'm just cutting and pasting... hope the formatting comes through OK...

    Connecting VIP722 Using Wireless Network

The box for this particular NetGear WAP plainly states that it supports wireless bridging and repeater modes. But I confess when I bought it that I was basically guessing it would work, not knowing at the time precisely what sort of configuration would be necessary. We already had the one...

    R15 & Wireless Internet?

My parents have a DirecTV R15 receiver. Right now it connects with the DirecTV mothership via their Telco landline. They will be changing their setup to a cable modem with VOIP sometime soon, so the Telco landline will be more or less cut off. I'm probably going to have to help them...

    Connecting VIP722 Using Wireless Network

The only thing that was a significant impediment was figuring out how to get the two WAPs to bridge. The instructions from NetGear were not totally helpful, so I finally broke down and emailed their tech support people. They sent step-by-step instructions, which worked. Not being an expert in...

    Connecting VIP722 Using Wireless Network

I'm posting this in the hope that my experience with the VIP722 we have can help someone in the future. We were TiVo users before we got our VIP722 from Dish. We used a wireless connection for the TiVo that was hooked up like this: Cable Modem --> Hardware router/firewall --> Wireless...
