    Voom and Tivo

Since we can't seem to get a definite date on when the Voom DVR will be released, I've been thinking about picking up one of the cheaper Tivo boxes to tide me over until that time. I realize it doesn't record in HD. Would I be wasting my money? How does the Tivo program guide work with Voom?

How many clients will you need or willing to pay for?

Is it necessary to get one of the thin clients if you're only connecting one TV and don't care about the whole house networking thing?

    Found new HD DVR!!!

Anyone know what this means exactly? I assume it means loosing the ability to record in HD - in which case it would be much cheaper to just buy a Tivo.

    i love VOOM but

Here's what you get when you log in: 1. Your personal account info - The programming you subscribe to, your address, the equipment you have installed, and whether your account is currently active or not. 2. How much money you owe Voom. 3. The ability to change your password and email...

    Moving with Voom

If you cancel and then resubscribe after you move, you will probably get stuck with the new install charges and the higher program package rates. Definitely call and ask if you can just have your existing service moved to the new house. It might cost you a little up front, but it will...

    Dumping Voom...

I haven't compared those channels to Vooms main channels yet, but I will. How are you receiving HDNet and INHD? There is a possibility that they will look worse on my TV because of the compression used by my cable company. I already know that Voom's Discovery HD Theater looks a little sharper...

Do you get a paper bill before VOOM withdraws $ from your CC?

Looks like your first bill is a month of service after the fact and your second bill is for a month of service in advance. You can probably expect to be charged around the 15th of every month from now on. This is all just assumption on my part, but it seems logical.

    Dumping Voom...

And I thought the picture quality on the HD channels was pretty good too, until I got Voom. I can't understand why people complain about Voom's picture quality. Maybe I just haven't seen what HD is capable of?

    Dumping Voom...

I have Brighthouse and this is the exact same package I have including the 3mbps Internet access and HD DVR. It's pricey, but you get a big variety of programming. Here is a list of HD channels I get through Brighthouse: 1. OTA ABC 2. OTA NBC 3. Discovery HD Theater 4. INHD 5...

    Dumping Voom...

Regardless of what the numbers say, I get a great picture (better than my cable service anyway) so I'm not complaining. All I need now is the PVR that's supposedly just around the corner. I already have one for cable (Scientific Atlanta 8000HD).

    Dumping Voom...

For the record, I'm on the West Coast and I get great reception - 95 on satellite and 99 OTA. I think a lot depends on the geographic features of the area you live in. I've had very few problems with my box other that a few usability gripes. I also have the best of both worlds as I subscribe...

Do you get a paper bill before VOOM withdraws $ from your CC?

I signed up for Voom on 7/20 and got installed on 7/26. On 7/27 I called in to see if I could be sent a paper bill and pay by check, but was told that was not possible. Instead I just changed the credit card I wanted to use for my account. My voom online statement shows my current charges...

    How's Voom Doing?

Voom may not be better than the other satellite services for HD picture quality, but they definitely beat out my cable service (though not by much).

Voom Networked Home Solution and Voom's DVR

Will a Tivo work with Voom? Will it just downconvert HD to SD on the composite and S-video outputs on the Motorola box? This may be an interim solutions until Voom releases it's HD PVR (I was told 6 months by a CSR a few days ago). I have no other means of recording off Voom at this time.

    Voom Billing strikes again.

According to a CSR I spoke with a few days ago, Voom does not send out paper bills in the mail. They require that you have a credit card on file for billing. This makes me nervous too, but apparently there aren't any other options.

Voom Networked Home Solution and Voom's DVR

Because WM9 is so much more efficient than MPEG2 it will require much less disk space. WM9 on a 160GB drive would be like MPEG2 on a 640GB drive. Of course this assumes that Voom makes the switch to WM9 before their PVR is released.

    Found new HD DVR!!!

Apparently you won't be able to play your backup DVDs from this system in regular stand alone DVD players because of the non-standard file format. This is a deal breaker. And so is the price of blank media ~$14 per disc.

    VOOM Installations

I didn't know the verticle pillars were part of the signal. I guess I'll stick to whatching the local channels on my digital cable STB, which does do the stretch, for SD programming. I had read elsewhere that 6.1 was available, but I was surprised since 6.0 is so new.

    VOOM Installations

New install in Bakersfield, CA I had the Voom satellite service installed on the 26th. The installation took about 2 hours and went very smoothly. A separate OTA antenna was included for the local digital channels. The lead installer was very knowledgeable and thorough, but his helper was quite...
