Retailers: Blu-ray Will Soon Top DVD Player Sales

It could also be that everybody on the planet already has a DVD player. Or two. Or three. So the ones being sold now are mostly replacements for worn out units. I'm all for HD moving forward and becoming more reasonably priced. But I think this announcement is just an example of "magic with...

    HDDVD Deals

That place is in Canada. Those are probably Canadian Dollars in the prices (I don't know the current conversion to US Dollars). S&H from Canada might be expensive too (I don't know - just guessing). But the prices sure look like a great deal if those two potential gotcha's don't bite you in...

    Blu-ray interactivity enlivens 'Sleeping Beauty'

I was thinking of older animation, not older live action. I was questioning what BD would offer for hand-drawn animation for the era of Snow White.

    Blu-ray interactivity enlivens 'Sleeping Beauty'

Does BD add anything to these old animation titles? I don't know, I'm asking. Maybe special features. I just can't imagine the picture and audio quality going up all that much. And even it if did, who would care? Probably not the young children who are the main audience for these movies.

    Blu-ray interactivity enlivens 'Sleeping Beauty'

The only interactivity I would want for Sleeping Beauty is a mute button. That high pitched voice is horrible!

    What I'll miss about HD-DVD

You sound like one of those people who say, "Well, it worked for ME. It didn't work for YOU? That makes you a vocal minority of bitching people. You don't deserve to get what you paid for because you're in the minority." Mr. Spock would spontaneously nerve pinch you for that kind of logic...

    What I'll miss about HD-DVD

It would be cheaper, and better (for the consumer) to just package a separate DVD in with the BluRay. Some combo disks in some HDDVD players/firmware are not without their problems. It would probably be the same for BD. The movie studios would probably not allow this though. They'd say you...

    Question

I thought HDMI was the new standard. Although I hate it and see that it's a terribly thought out kludge, I still bought it because of the stupid DRM garbage. So are they now thinking about obsoleting the TVs/amps that have HDMI connectors, like they did for the component ones?

    Question

IMHO, BluRay will never become the standard, it will remain a niche product. But that's just my opinion. And those who believe Bluray *will* become the standard aren't predicting BD outselling standard DVD's any time soon. We are talking years and years ... and years. If you are talking...

    Question

I see you have a 47" TV. You will need to be sitting reasonably close to that to distinguish a significant amount of difference between BD and unconverted DVD. Look at the distance you sit back from the set to determine what, if any, difference you might be able to see. Then look at the cost...

New Line Announces 'Dark City' Director's Cut Blu-ray

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. It's a great movie too. Funny that I forgot about it ... I own the DVD!

New Line Announces 'Dark City' Director's Cut Blu-ray

I like these "You're not where your think you are" themed movies. Anybody have suggestions for others? The ones I can remember off the top of my head are Dark City, The Matrix, The 13th Floor, and eXistenZ.

A few decent prices on BD at BestBuy

The box says DD 5.1. Of course, anything can be converted into that ... even mono. Chances are nobody else in the family will watch it with me, so that relegates me to a late night viewing with headphones. So Dolby Stereo shouldn't be all that bad!

A few decent prices on BD at BestBuy

The newest addition to my media library (I have an HDDVD player) was ... First Blood on standard DVD! Saw it in Target for $5.50 and just picked it up on a whim. I don't usually buy movies when they're new releases and therefore high priced. OK, it took me 26 years to get around to buying...

Study finds high prices, hamstrung players limiting Blu-ray's dominance

I agree there is a big difference between HD and SD when compared side-by-side. And between B/W and color. I was referring to the difference in the overall movie watching experience, not the pixel watching experience. I just watched a B/W movie the other night and had no problems enjoying it.

Study finds high prices, hamstrung players limiting Blu-ray's dominance

I don't buy the whole "inflation" or "you gotta pay more because it's better" arguments. Nope. I expect to pay less for electronics as time advances. BluRay has been advancing for what, almost two years now? I replaced a 10 year old SD rear projection 60" TV with a much better 65" HD one...

Study finds high prices, hamstrung players limiting Blu-ray's dominance

Correction, BD are about 1/5 the cost of a fillup for me. Unless they've raised BD prices more. 34 gallon tank.

HD-A2 as upscaling, it is better than standard?

Other than generically saying an A2 is better than the worst upconvertor and (probably) not as good as the best, you'll have to find someone who owns both your chosen "regular upconverter" and an A2 to make comparisons. My hunch is that they would be in the same ballpark, but that's just a...

HD-A2 as upscaling, it is better than standard?

Depends on which "regular upscaling player" you are talking about. A $200 Oppo upscaler? No. At $29 "Ding-wow" upscaler, most certainly.

BD Touch Blu-ray disc-to-iPhone app officially unveiled

Sounds like another solution in search of a problem to me. And the point of watching a high resolution, good audio Bluray movie on an iPhone would be...? And the point of buying an expensive iPhone to use as a remote control would be...? Just because you can, doesn't mean you'd want to.

Wal-mart: Full HD DVD player refunds

If Walmart would sell off these used player returns for around $25, I'd buy two or three more. They are fantastic upconvertors. The only downside is they take longer to boot up than a normal DVD player. That doesn't really bother me much, but others might not care for it. Walmart would have...

    BD Live is a Joke!!

Which reminds me of what many BD fans did when HDDVD lost. I think immature is immature, irregardless of whether one prefers BD or HDDVD. I agree: BD-Live appears to be a joke. I agree: I see no compelling reason for BD-Live. I wonder: Why did the BD group even pursue it in the first...

    BD Live is a Joke!!

But I thought this WAS the firmware update! Personally, I don't really care about extras too much. I watch them sometimes, I like to have them, but don't watch them all that much. However, imagine the mess people would be in if they tried a firmware upgrade using BD-Live, given it's...

Why Blu-ray will be the next DVD

Page 2. Top right. That being said, this is not a product I'd want. It does claim it does HD, however, you're not going to squeeze much HD onto a standard DVD, which is what it claims to use. I guess it might be of use if you limit your HD recordings to 5 minutes each. My guess it that...

Why Blu-ray will be the next DVD

Electronics prices get lower and lower all the time, and products gain more and more features and better quality (usually, on that quality part!) My calculator now is vastly superior to the first one I ever bought. That first one cost me $159 back in the 70's and a better model can now be had...
