Never had an issue with BD or HDDVD, but that protective coating would sure help on the HD side of things.

No I refuse to support the studios because I feel they made a bad decision to support HD-DVD over BD, but I do want to see the movies, so the least way that I will support them is thru rentals. I have mine connected via optical, and there is a HUGE difference in sound when i switch from the DD or DTS track to the Uncompressed PCM. But as I said the back two channels are no longer discrete. And i miss that greatly, but the clarity and overwhelming loudness from the Uncompressed track...

Also, if I have a AV reciever with HDMI pass thru, i should be able to watch with LPCM correct, and HDMI 1.3 is not necessary for that as it is for DTSMA and TrueHD
