    Manufacturing C-Band Dishes

I can't believe that the guy cutting metal is not wearing gloves. Also agree on the painting setup--primitive does not even begin to describe it. We are lucky in our part of the world to have some safety regulations (when enforced) to protect workers.

10 foot solid perfoated Unimesh dish

A Perforated antenna will hold its shape much better over time, and when compared to a mesh antenna of the same diameter, the perforated type normally outperforms mesh at the time of initial installation, and most certainly after a number of years. A perf is made of sheets of solid metal that...

    Unimesh LNB Black Cover Pins

Some suppliers to the cable and satellite industry do not always mention a Underwriter's Laboratory listing. I was just reporting my personal experience between Alaska and hot climates such as those in California and Nevada. Black plastic stands up much better than a lighter color such as...

    Unimesh LNB Black Cover Pins

It is a lot easier to change cable ties every time you need to get inside those buckets. Would suggest buying a bag with a few dozen or more black ties, 8 inch length. The 8 inch length because they have more gripping power than smaller ties, and the black color because light colors are much...

    103 West / C-band reception

It was super strong before the storm and today's adjusting, so will probably have to fix this scientifically. It IS Spring, so weather isn't really an obstacle as long as it is not raining. Thanks for confirming. Mike

    103 West / C-band reception

I've been recovering from the alignment issues caused by frequent high winds buffeting my 10-foot Winegard Pinnacle Perf. Got the whole arc working again from 55.5 to 139 West, but seeing strange reception situation where 103 West used to be. 93 97 99 101 and 105 West are all working right...

    Orbitron SX-10 Dish

The Orbitron C-10 was of the type that used a locking strip that pounded in between each panel. I never did like that model, because it had issues in high wind areas and simply did not hold completely in place. The SX-10 was similar to the SX-8.5 in that you had to slide in the panels as...

    Orbitron SX-10 Dish

I worked for Frank Leach from 1991 to 1999, as Technical Director at Orbitron. He came to Wisconsin to study under Frank Lloyd Wright, and stayed in the Spring Green area for many years, retiring when the business was sold in 1999. Sometime in the early 1990s I remember an episode of Northern...

Yet again! No horizontal on ses 1 at 101

Your 91% strength reading confirms that you are operating the system, but not really much more than that. If you have a similar reading on the other polarity, but have a fair to good Quality reading, that is where you should be adjusting and monitoring. Quality reading often differs between H...

    The General / KSAT / C-SAT information

Responding to your separate request. I spent over a dozen years in Alaska (1974-1987), following up with work in southern California from 1987-1991. It was not until I returned to the Upper Midwest in 1991 that I had the luxury of installing a permanent dish, and the time to enjoy it. I...

Need help to identify unknown interference

If you have issues with bees or wasps inside a weather cover, I can suggest an old-school remedy: buy a small package of moth balls. Place them inside the enclosure within a mesh bag. It also creates a smell that birds do not like, should you have an issue with that. Good luck! Mike

Need help to identify unknown interference

Another possibility is a drifting LNB or LNBF. Could be temperature sensitive, but more likely would be the LO drifting when the LNB/LNBF is directly in the sun. Take a small plastic garbage can and slide over the device, and see if the problem goes away. If this is the cause, it is either...

    Polarity Issue

John, Try scanning 4180 H @ 30.000 again and see if it shows up. If not, do a blind scan. This transponder has been re-configured at least two times in as many weeks to allow expansion of the Weigel mux, and it might be a quick solution before you spend a lot of time tweaking the arm, given...

Need help to identify unknown interference

As noted by others, there was a change in FEC setup on 4180 MHz two or three days ago. If you have not done so, re-scan this Weigel transponder. I find that it is now considerably stronger in quality reading, and all channels have returned.

Can you use 18" actuator on a 10ft dish if you only need to access 0°W - 100°W?

I have a 24 inch Von Weise actuator on the identical dish, which is confirmed as a Winegard Pinnacle Perf. In Wisconsin, my true south point is at 90 West longitude. No problem going from 55.5 to 135 West. Could go as far as 139 West, but unless you are a bit west of the Mississippi River...

    Glare causing loss of signal

Do you have a picture of the dish, showing any shiny areas that heat up when the sun is out? A solid dish of shiny construction can create a lot of heat at the focal point during the midday sun. If it is tracking the arc, and you are near semi-annual outages such as in February or October, it...

    Rusted LNB Arm

Chances are that a piece of conduit might be at least as long as the entire feed support. Your replacement will be much stronger and less likely to crumble from corrosion if you can remove existing feed arm and try to duplicate the entire length, with similar bends. And you will need to use a...

    Uniden SQ560 receiver shutting down

Disconnect the Satellite input coax cable from the receiver, and then try turning the power on again. Sometimes over time things will happen to cables that causes them to short out (ground to center conductor). If this is the case, your receiver was trying to protect itself from that shorting...

    George Antunes has passed away

George Antunes of Houston, TX passed away on November 21, 2023. His name may be less than familiar to most Satellite Guys members, but he was instrumental in working behind the scenes to "spread the gospel" of satellite reception during the 90s and the first half of the 2000 decade. George was...

    Bob Cooper has passed away

Actually I have to give most of the credit to George Antunes in Houston, who provided constant updates of all kinds of interesting news. Gary and I may have read much of this, but George was our primary source.

Okay to have scaler ring black?

I would use a flat black paint rather than gloss type if you must have the scalar ring black. Remember that the f/d ratio on a Pinnacle Perf is very close to 0.28, so confirm that you have the feed and scalar in that depth before fine tuning the focal point. Chaparral Gold Rings were used as an...

    Bob Cooper has passed away

Between your contributions, and everything I encountered while searching in Denver in 2019, Bob was able to reconstruct the collection of Coop's Satellite Digest and the New Zealand-based SatFacts. He put updated information on his website. Thank you again!

    Bob Cooper has passed away

You are most welcome. Bob's health had been failing for some time, but I was still not ready for his passing. It was a privilege to know him as a colleague and good friend. May he finally rest in peace.

    Bob Cooper has passed away

I just received a note from Bob Cooper's wife that he has recently passed away. Bob (Robert Britt Cooper, Jr) was the father of the home satellite industry, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for planting the seeds that started this industry, starting with an article in TV Guide magazine...
