    HD America Gold

My single biggest disappointment with Dish America was losing my Platinum channels. I had reconciled myself to losing all of the News Corp channels (except for NatGeo in Gold), but losing HDNet Movies, UniHD, and MGMHD was almost more than I could bear.

    922 dvr

Do you use DishOnline? Do you use Sling-like technologies currently? If no to either one, skip the 922, and buy an EHD for your 722k instead. There are cheaper ways to do either one, if you don't currently do both.

    HD only packs ?

Hemi, if you go with D*, insist on an HR-24.

    HD only packs ?

Oops. I'll have to respond when I get home; all of those channels are blocked in my guide, by me. Pretty sure I get Dis and DisXD, don't remember Toon or Nick. Actually, I think Nick isn't there, but I'll just have to look.

    HD only packs ?

I switched to Dish America Bronze about 2 billing cycles ago. It costs me $35-ish per month (plus one DVR fee [my only receiver is a leased 722, feeding one TV]), so I have USA/TNT/Spike/Locals for about $42 per month after taxes. There are also Silver and Gold tiers, but I'm doing this to shave...

    VIP 622 signal loss

Do you use the OTA antenna input on the 622? If the last thing that the DVR did was try to tune an OTA channel, and you don't have a rock-steady signal on that channel, it can cause the error that you're describing.

    BBC, AJE, RT, etc.

I'm not sayin' you're wrong; I'm sayin' there's no money in it, and Dish supposedly runs a business, not an education service. Also, check your local PBS. I have two within reach OTA, and they both air BBC World on a subchannel at a Primetime News-ish hour. The antenna tuner on my ViP receiver...

    BBC, AJE, RT, etc.

You said the S word; Sports. FSN pulls more tangible revenue than all of the other channels you listed put together. I don't watch FSN, you probably don't, and a lot of others don't, but that's something that more people are willing to pay for. I'm with Iceberg; if you want internationals...

Can you do this with Dishnetwork?

eMachines EL1333G-01w Desktop PC with AMD Athlon 2850e Processor & Windows 7 Home Premium - $298, +$50 for a tuner; we're in the same neighborhood. :) Down side is that this PC has no HDMI output, but one of it's [2] PCIe slots is occupied by a modem, so one could add two cards.

Can you do this with Dishnetwork?

I have DISH America With Locals ($34.99), one 722 DVR Service ($6.00), and pay about $1.22 in taxes per month. This brings my bill to $42.21, which is officially the least expensive way to have a DVR and HD service through Dish. With Dish America, I CANNOT add premium channels or even Platinum...

    Question about HD

Dish has a history of announcing channels that a) never happen at all, b) happen months past their promised date, or c) don't get announced at all, and just magically appear one day. Same goes for dropping channels. Don't feel like you're being left in the dark, because we all are. You can...

    722 skip back problem.

On SD and HD programs, or SD only? This doesn't seem to depend on program resolution, either. I've learned that the best way to see a specific frame is to pause it, go forward one step, and then back. I don't know why this works, but it's a lot more controllable than pausing and trying to...

    Shortcut to Closed Captioning?

During my late-night sessions when everyone else in the house is asleep, that's what I do. But in the morning or afternoon, when I can crank up the volume a bit to get over the noise floor, it continues to annoy me. And for those times when the actor is too muffled or the script is just too...

    Shortcut to Closed Captioning?

Sorry, guys, I'm hallucinating. My TV only enables the CC option on the antenna. I need this to work, though.

    Shortcut to Closed Captioning?

Doesn't work on my TV for some reason. Which is odd, because it works for my DVD player with this TV, but not the 722. Good catch. Takes 11 down to 9, or a 19% reduction in work. ;)

    Shortcut to Closed Captioning?

Nope. If you memorize the menu option numbers, it can be done in no fewer than 11 clicks. I'm just as pissed off about this as anyone, and I'm NOT hearing impaired. I have kids, and I work nights (TV time is often at 3AM), and I want to read what they're saying, but I can't do it quickly. Menu...

    Homeplug question

Would something like this simplify your life? brite-View LinkE pipes content to four Ethernet sources over existing powerline network -- Engadget I'm sure it's not quite what you're asking for, but the ability to plug a bunch of network devices (722, Blu-ray player, game console, etc) into one...

Anyone Compare Component vs. HDMI HD Picture Quality?

The 722 and 722k have a few issues with audio via HDMI, but it's supposed to work just fine. I think the note in the manual is mostly talking about people using HDMI-to-DVI adapter cables, and DVI doesn't do audio. Try it, but it should just work. If it doesn't work, some Cheap-O RCA cables come...

Anyone Compare Component vs. HDMI HD Picture Quality?

You are uninformed, but that's super-easy with HDMI. HDMI is a specification, 1.4 is a revision, and 3D (or ethernet, or DeepColor, or whatever) are features. REVISION 1.4 is the first time that the 3D FEATURE has been written into the SPECIFICATION, but that doesn't mean that it can't work with...

    722 skip back problem.

My 722 used to do this with SD programs, but has never done it with HD programs. My fix: don't record SD stuff. :p

    DTVPAL DVR Clone?

DTVPal only had two tuners as well. You're right about the $100 price bump, but maybe this is so that CM can run "awesome sale" prices. I'm extremely tempted; the DTVPal is the only DVR that can operate purely on PSIP data, though it includes no record by name functionality. So if the...

Anyone Compare Component vs. HDMI HD Picture Quality?

That's half true, sully, but nobody at Dish has talked about 3D yet. It's looking at this point like HDMI 1.3 is sufficient for the DirecTV system, since they're basically using 720p@30 or 1080i@60 because the frames are actually half-width L and R frames transmitted as a single full-width...

Anyone Compare Component vs. HDMI HD Picture Quality?

    Indeed...each transport sucks equally. ;)

Anyone Compare Component vs. HDMI HD Picture Quality?

I think the reason for that is the generally poor quality of Dish broadcasts; you can't polish a turd, and HDMI is sufficient to carry the medium-quality signal they broadcast. You could do a better evaluation using an OTA signal than anything that Dish provides. Legally, you're right...
