    A1 firmware 2.1 coming

Do we know if this is supposed to speed up the player boot up times or fix the freezes associated with playing rented HD DVD disks?

    Content relief coming....

I think this is key. Universal needs to get a list of these titles offically out soon to slow down the BD momentum. These releases would definitely put HD DVD on an equal footing with BD in terms of the quantity and quality of overall releases.

Turn HD-A1 off or leave it on?

I leave mine on just like I do with my computer.

    Best looking HD-DVD Title

Phantom of the Opera is still my favorite -- just amazing colors and scenery. But I recently rented We Were Soldiers and thought that was an outstanding transfer as well.

    HD-A1 Audio Question

Thanks, it must be a problem with my set-up then.

    HD-A1 Audio Question

I have a quick audio question. I am set up for 5.1 analog audio output for HD DVD movies but prefer the digital component output for SD DVD. But I can't seem to get the component output to work when I change it on my audio receiver. Do I need to change something on my HD-A1 in order to enable...

In Defense of HD DVD at Best Buy

I have to say that I disagree with this somewhat. When the HD DVD price point gets near $300 I think you might see a lot of people going for it. It does a great job of playing regular DVDs and you can rent HD DVDs online. If Joe consumer is willing to pay $500 plus for a game system then you...

In Defense of HD DVD at Best Buy

I read somewhere that they think that the outcome of this format war may not have one winner for a long time but two standing side by side relying largely on dual format players. But the early prices I've seen from such players is exceedingly high so I think I'll be staying with my Tosh for a...

In Defense of HD DVD at Best Buy

Even with all of this misinformation and marketing buzz behind BR I can't figure out who would actually buy the unit. At $999 and with 4 or 5 titles released, it's hard to imagine Joe consumer going for it. And certainly the videophiles like us read these forums and know what's going on. So...

HD DVD Takes the Early Lead over Blue Ray

In my area of norther Virginia I haven't found HD DVDs anywhere but BB. Also, both BB and CC are strongly pushing Blue Ray in my area.

In Defense of HD DVD at Best Buy

Interesting how different areas are handling it differently. At my BBs they have shoved the Toshes into the aisle and put all of the movies there as well. I also noticed the BB and CC have Blue Ray prominently in their ads this weekend -- don't recall any ads for HD DVD but perhaps I am...

In Defense of HD DVD at Best Buy

So, my local Best Buys are really pushing the Samsung Blue Ray units which are now prominently displayed on the end caps while the Tosh's are now shoved into a side aisle. I'm not sure what Sony has done to sell BR but the Blockbuster sales guys are buying it hook line and sinker. Anyway...

HD DVD Takes the Early Lead over Blue Ray

Well, I have been parousing the various early reviews of the new Samsung Blue Ray Player and there seems to be an early (with an emphasis on the word early) consensus that that the HD DVD picture quality is clearly better than Blue Ray. Apparently, the first blue ray titles aren't living up to...

Perfect Vision Review of the HD-A1

One of my favorite publications, the Perfect Vision, just came out with a very positive review of the HD DVD Player. I can't give a link since it is a subscription publication but you can get a free sample online or go to your local bookstore. This review is even prior to the firmware update...

OFFICIAL Toshiba firmware 1.2 update NOW AVAILABLE!

Thanks for the advice on the upload Ilya! Re: selling your wife on the HD-A1, I would suggest the following strategy. Purchase it from a place in which you can return it within 30 days. Order several wife-friendly HD-DVDs from Netflix and emphasize the beautiful PQ and sound. I have...

OFFICIAL Toshiba firmware 1.2 update NOW AVAILABLE!

I called Toshiba and ordered a CD. I was told I would get it in 7 to 10 business days -- I'm not sure if I have that kind of patience. What link is everyone using to download this? Is it the unofficial link?

    Unofficial HD DVD firmware upgrade.

Did you have any problems before the upgrade? Also, does this upgrade help in terms of how finicky this machine can be with respect to certain HD discs that have small scratches and what not?

    Another HD-A1 Review

A good movie to try even if you're not a big fan is Phantom of the Opera. The picture and sound quality are just amazing (although I did have to crank up my receiver volume a lot).

If this occurs, can you let us rookies know how to do the firmware update? I've actually never done one!

    Another HD-A1 Review

I don't think the lack of availability is because of this but I'm not sure. There is a poll over at AVS and 90 percent are satisfied with their purchase and keeping their unit. As I said before, many have experienced no problems while others (perhaps a minority) have experienced freezes and...

    Another HD-A1 Review

From what I have followed in other forums (particularly AVS) there appears to be some units which, for some reason, have a lock up problem. There is some uncertainty regarding why some units have this problem and what is causing it -- be it there other electronic connections, the remote, etc...

LOTR: HD Dvd or Blue Ray or Both

From what I've read, it definitely looks like LOTR will be made available on HD DVD but with no known release date. In the meantime, I found the following link which is pretty neat. It compares an HD image with an SD image for selected scenes from LOTR. The results are pretty amazing and...

The List of HD DVD titles

Here is a link to a list of titles that are supposedly to come on HD DVD. I'm not sure how legitimate the list is but it has a number of additional titles including the Lord of the Rings trilogy. http://www.hddvdprg.com/list/060517list.pdf
