Chinese HD DVD players still possible this year

I think it will be a combination of features in a box that could make the adoption of HDDVD possible. Look at popular manufacturer APEX, whose DVD players were widely bought because of region-free coding, and they could read any mpeg-1/2 without being formatted to a dvd/vcd/svcd compliant spec...

    HD-DVD copy protection in tatters

HDCP would not effect this aspect of ripping because the files are being unlocked and ripped to the harddrive. If the code were turned on, it would really only mean that the device you are using for playback would require HDMI or DVI-D. The 'protected' data which was encrypted through AACS...

Blu-ray to copy films to laptops (and other devices)

Agreed, but will the average consumer see it that way, or will it be a point that sways public opinion in favor of Blu-Ray as the next platform? Also, will studios find DRM and lower res files undesirable? I think they can handle it if Sony can pull of quick adoption of the platform... then...

Blu-ray to copy films to laptops (and other devices)

I would assume some kind of DRM.. Once that is cracked though, Hollywood would not be too happy. However, these files are undoubtedly lower quality versions of the film encoded to various transferrable formats... Perhaps an iPod h.264, and a DVD-quality file for laptops. Seeing as how a...

Cheap HD DVD players coming from China

Sony wouldn't shoot themselves in the foot. If HD-DVD became the prevailing format, they would release their movies in HD-DVD along with all the other studios. We know the reverse is true as well.

LG may end Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war with Dual Player at CES!!

If all of the studios adopted the TotalHD disc format, then consumers would be given a choice as to what hardware they prefer. If LG makes the pricing attractive on their dualplayers though, I'll bet that will be the kicker. It will then be a battle of which releases are better, the BD disc or...

    HD DVD will Win!

Just a little update since my last repsonse... Well, it doesn't really matter if Japan or Europe adapts to a different format. They can release their films in a different format over here. Case in point: VideoCD was huge in Asian countries, but didn't have a following in the US. People...

    HD DVD will Win!

Actually, with variable bitrate it is possible to fit more movie onto a disc without compromising quality. Static scenes without a lot of motion take up a lot of data unnecessarily. If done correctly, like some 1 disc VHS quality MPEG-1 VCD's and 1-disc DivX files I've seen, the proper bitrate...
