HDCP would not effect this aspect of ripping because the files are being unlocked and ripped to the harddrive. If the code were turned on, it would really only mean that the device you are using for playback would require HDMI or DVI-D. The 'protected' data which was encrypted through AACS...

Sony wouldn't shoot themselves in the foot. If HD-DVD became the prevailing format, they would release their movies in HD-DVD along with all the other studios. We know the reverse is true as well.

If all of the studios adopted the TotalHD disc format, then consumers would be given a choice as to what hardware they prefer. If LG makes the pricing attractive on their dualplayers though, I'll bet that will be the kicker. It will then be a battle of which releases are better, the BD disc or...
