voOm is dead and Cablevision has shown that it doesn't have the desire to do what it takes to run an HD centric DBS. The best we can all hope for is a comparable or better service to emerge from a company that won't bail out on it prematurely.

Interesting info... If such is the case and these STBs are so valuable to Cablevision & Motorola then I will require Cablevision to remove my dish and patch the holes on my roof when they come to pick up my STBs and leave signed paperwork indicating that the STBs were turned over.

Even if this is the case, voom could still send a firmware update by the 30th that permanently enables OTA without the need for a "heartbeat" to remain activated. Whether they would do this is another issue.

It could also be that some installers are making it sound like it is "urgent" that the equipment get sent back to voom so that they can make a quick sale. To this point, I have already had two installers soliciting D*, apparently because they saw the voOm dish on my roof while they were...

The only way that Cablevision is sure to abandon recovering the STBs is if every subscriber insists that voom removes their dish while their collecting the STBs or refuses to return the STB until they have removed the dish. Of course this will not ensure that the OTA tuner will remain activated...

I think it would be cost effective and a great way to show us voOmers how much they appreciated our business for Cablevision to leave the OTA tuners active and allow us to keep them. Either that, or leave them active and offer them to us "AS IS" at good deal... Say $25 each.

Maybe if voOmers as a community ask that OTA be permanently enabled someone at Cablevision (C.Dolan) will take mercy on us. It would seem that the cost of collecting STBs would outweigh the benefits. Even if its just sending an empty shipping box, they still have to pay for shipping and...

I think it's safe to say that if it happens it will be a while before these channels are available elsewhere and it will definitely be at a premium price. D* & E* better not be expecting to pickup these channels cheap... The main reason that they are marketing this content to other providers...

Worst case scenario is that they deactivate all the boxes and don't even bother collecting them. I guess it may be a good idea to disconnect the STB from the dish prior to April 30. This way if voom does send a kill signal it won't deactivate the STB.
