DVD Recorders: Who's using them with Voom?

    Can't record HD. Only SD.

DVR "special program" for charter members?

Well, yes and no. If you buy the equipment and a warranty is included, they are obligated to provide you service for the length of the warranty or they are liable for the equipment costs. This was already discussed in another forum.

DVR "special program" for charter members?

I realize I am not a charter member in the same sense as you guys (purchased in March of last year) but I am still an owner, and was promised at the time special considerations for the DVR that included trading in our old receivers at a discount or something like that. -MP

HDDVR add-ons - will they work with Voom?

That has to be one of the dumbest things CSRs have said to date. All it would get you is a lovely SVideo recording.

Man I love an optimist ;)

When will VOOM's DVR finally hit the streets?

You are correct Sean, it was never a spec sheet. But the very first demo boxes supposedly had them, and it was dicsusses at those presentations as a feature. And Wilt was pushing to keep it.

When will VOOM's DVR finally hit the streets?

To be fair, the original specs floated had firewire and Wilt himself said that he was fighting to keep firewire on the box. -MP

    VOOM DSR-580 DVR Spec Sheet

Oh please, not having HDMI on this box means NOTHING to us now. Let's be honest. The only thing HDMI would gain you at this point in time is a slightly better cable spec distance and a smaller form factor for the end. *shrug* I don't get the angst. If they toss in a free DVI-HDMI adapter...

    VOOM DSR-580 DVR Spec Sheet

The cable companies agreed to it. They were sort of forced to the table at a time when it seemed like firewire was going to become a huge thing in HDTV. I don't think it's anywhere close to the level they thought it would be, unfortunately. So I doubt you'll see the equivelant requirement for...

    VOOM DSR-580 DVR Spec Sheet

None of them. They have no motivation to, and certainly don't care to be sued. There is no requirement for sat operators the same as what the cable companies agreed to.

The DVR info we DIDN'T get

    Correct, 3 possible streams total.

The DVR info we DIDN'T get

They should be around 19mbps unless they are really comrpessing them. But to answer my own question, the presenter said essentially what I thought... 2 recording, 1 viewing. Which would mean 3 streams.

Recording Modes on the New DVR?

Voom Ces Dvr Demo Now Online!

What are they doing to "upgrade Rainbow 1"? Is it the MPEG4 upgrade, or something else?

Voom Ces Dvr Demo Now Online!

You can always get a wireless 11g bridge. Doesn't matter then, becauase Voom will think it's wired.

Sounds like you want Replay ;). Seriously, SonicBlue did almost all this with the Replays years ago. I hope Ucentric can follow suit.

The DVR info we DIDN'T get

I do question how they would be able to support so many streams from a single hard drive. Being able to archive 2 HD streams and play a 3rd at the same time is just about the througput of a standard IDE drive, which it seems like they are using. You will also be bandwidth-limited in your...

BREAKING VOOM DVR News from CES!!!

There are 2 advantages to HDMI currently. It has a smaller cable and head connector, and it is spec'd for longer distances than DVI. -MP

jagouar, thanks. The networking part still isn't completely clear to me, especially since the preview video is fairly old at this point. I was hoping they'd go to CAT5-based networking instead. Ah well.

The DVR info we DIDN'T get

Here's the list of what I wanted to hear about, and we didn't seem to get anything solid on: 1) Firewire... yay or nay? 2) Pricing... rent or own? Will owners of current hardware get the promised price break? 3) When they say they are all networkable, what does that mean? Unit to unit...

BREAKING VOOM DVR News from CES!!!

Can the current STBs be used as part of the solution? Or will we have to switch out all our boxes for the next gen design? Will box owners get this swap-out for free?

Will Voom Show a real DVR tomorrow at CES 2005? Yes!

Sean, its fine to crack jokes but the press conference was cancelled. We'd like to know why. DirecTV came out swinging today, and so far Voom has done nothing but promise us 200+ SD channels that most of us could care less about.
