    The wife factor.

I could have worse hobbies With 5 dishes currently installed, and planning on number 6 she is pretty good about it all. I used to be pretty hardcore into Ham Radio, and had two big towers, now I have none, just a few dishes. They are not as obtrusive as towers! Anyway, I placed an ad on...

    Dishes in the snow pics!

The Ultimate Dish in the Snow Pics Check this out. AT&T Earth Station at Indian Mountain Long Range Radar Site (USAF) in N. Central Alaska after a good blow. It sits on a mountain top at 4000'. One pic shows the dish in better conditions.

The right temp and humidity: Fog, mist and hoar frost

Hoar Frost-Interesting Backdrop Here are a couple pics I took in Ft. Yukon, Alaska in the 90's of the abandoned White Alice Communications System antennas before they were torn down. The system was built during the Cold War in the mid-late 50's to provide communications to the Dewline and...

Offset dishes There are a lot of Dish Network systems up north, next time I am around Barrow I'll take some pics. Most of the offset antennas are upside down, I think it is because the geometry of the mounts doesn't allow them to be mounted with the LNB on the bottom.

    Global Warming ... Part 2

Cold is relative.... I know if you aren't accustomed to snow it can be inconvenient, the "cold" WX can be hard on folks too. We have had a mild winter by Alaskan standards. It's only hit 40 below once so far in town, but out in the bush last week it was -55 to -60 around Ft. Yukon and some...

After a week of single digit temps in KY

Warm in Alaska It is amusing to see how folks react to colder weather when they are not used to it. To be fair, homes in the South are not built for it, people don't have the clothes, vehicles are not equipped for it, etc. Up here in Central Alaska, we are having the mildest winter I have...

pics of the dish farm...post yours too :)

My Dish Farm I just took these photos today. Dish Farm, Alaska style. The first photo is an 18" DirecTV dish pointed at 82. This is what a dish looks like that is only 1.3 degrees above the horizon. Next is a 48" on 110, and the 18" again. Then a 1 meter on 110, with a homemade mount. Next...

Modifying Andersen 1.8 Meter Dish with Polar Mount/Motor

Can get down to 82 degrees As far as look angle goes, 82 degrees is the limit. I will find out what can be received here once I get things setup. I suspect the Andersen will equal the performance of the 12 footer, maybe do better. I found out how narrow the beamwidth is on a 6 footer, a LOT...

Contest - TWO Free GEOSATpro CK1 LNBFs, Clamps and US / Canadian Shipping

How I Would Use the GEOSATpro CK1 LNBF If I win, I would test the limits of dual band reception from the far north. From 65 degrees north, near the Arctic Circle I would install the feed on my 12 foot Paraclipse copy (U.P. Superior). The antenna is on a 20 foot free-standing mount, with an...

Modifying Andersen 1.8 Meter Dish with Polar Mount/Motor

Andersen 1.8 Here is a picture of the homemade mount currently on the Andersen. Another shot shows the excellent location I have, unobstructed negative angle to the horizon all the way across the arc. The last one is the rest of the (current) dish farm minus the BUD. 48", 18", and 40". Don'...

Modifying Andersen 1.8 Meter Dish with Polar Mount/Motor

Polar Mount I have talked to Mike before, I am sure he would know about Alaska FTA. I will send an Email. Footprint maps should help a lot too. That Sadoun mount looks like it could be adapted for the Andersen, would need to build in quite an offset, something like 30 degrees including...

Modifying Andersen 1.8 Meter Dish with Polar Mount/Motor

I am planning on fabricating a sturdy, light, and easily adjustable polar mount for a 6" Andersen dish. I live in Central Alaska, and am going to try to see what I can pick up FTA in my area. I don't have a FTA receiver yet, and have no experience with them. I have tinkered around with DBS...

Does mesh size matter on 8'B U D

Paraclipse copy- 12' on KU I am about to find out myself, I have an old Paraclipse knock-off ( a very good one) from back in the day made by a company called U.P. Superior. I dragged it up to Alaska with me in the 80's, and used it for years on C band. I used to install C band systems, and...
