The Panny 50" Plasma can be had all over the place under $1000, it's what I have in my office. I've recommended it to several people who subsequently purchased it and everyone raves about it. the 480Hz sub-field eliminates motion blur with great black level.

Poor quality cables perhaps? If it is degrading slowly perhaps the connecter is slowly corroding. Remove the video cable(s) and clean the connectors. Let us know if it helps.

One of our sponsors, Sadoun, has some decent amplified indoor antennas on clearance. I don't know of any TV's that come with an antenna anymore, margins have plumeted and it's a cost the manufacturers don't want to bear.

Many CRT RPTV's are able to be disassembled insofar as removing the top (screen mirror) part of the set. I've seen quite a few sets like that get moved to a basement only to not work again. And WELCOME to Satelliteguys!

That Panny is made for gamers. While Panasonic usually boasts about hollywood producers helping them do the color depth and correction, their push this year with the AX200 is all about gaming and no lag. At CEDIA they had some gamer champ on hand that helped them tweat the AX200 to optimize it...
