They tried to ban the VCR

Let's see. The studios fought against television in the 1950's. Then they started the "Stop Pay TV" campaign to prevent the spread of cable in the 1960's and then they tried to ban the VCR. Each time they lost and then embraced the technology that they fought and ended up making tons of money...

    Rate Increase for WNY

Amd why does that surprise you? Time-Warner does that every year. (sometimes twice a year) You should think about switching. I've been with DirecTV for 11 years. Sure, they've got an increase coming too, but when you add in all the extra fees T-W charges it's still a lot cheaper than cable. New...

Hazleton, PA to demand permit fee for...

In general, permit fees are just a rip-off and a way for a local government to make money. When I bought our house and put up a chain link fence, the city charged $35 for a permit. They said it was for an inspection. It's fifteen years later and there has yet to be an inspection. Our county...

    Reporting Theft

Just curious. How do you know this guy is stealing it? I only ask because people who do steal cable or satellite seem to like to brag about it. You would think that if they were stealing it, am I'm not condoning that, they'd just keep their mouths shut. I use to have a neighbor stealing cable...

Time Warner to Satellite (direct or dish)

I wouldn't presume to tell you what you should do. I'll just say that I switched from T-W to DirecTV in 1999 and never regretted it. We do keep our internet service with them because my wife likes Road Runner, but if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have anything to do with them.

    People are STUPID

Wow! I thought it was only a guy I work with. He bought an HD because he got a "deal". Then he called up the cable company talks them into giving him three months of HD for free and when the time is up he goes back to standard cable. He has the SD picture stretched to fill the screen and claims...

Can you purchace your own cable box and use it w/ your cable?

While it's true that the prices of the boxes will come down as more are sold I think that the average cable customer (not the folks who are savvy and go on boards like this) will not go to the trouble or expense of buying them. I think the idea of paying a few bucks extra a month to lease them...

Can you purchace your own cable box and use it w/ your cable?

I work for a tv station and we just did a story about this a couple of days ago. This area is served by Time-Warner and while they have no problem with consumers owning a box, they'll still have to pay T-W a monthly fee for the cable card that has to plug into it. I think they said either $3.00...

Why are live shows delayed 3 hours for the west coast?

Besides the fact, that there would be a much lower number of people home to watch those shows at 5 or 6pm Pacific time, between five and eight is considered the local station's time and it's where they make most of their money with news and syndicated programs. While they might give it up on...

    Goodbuy Discovery Times??

Well, it always seemed to me that the "Times" part of the channel was pretty much in name and investment only and almost nothing to do with programming. While anything is possible, I don't see why they would make any major changes just because the Times is out. I guess we'll just have to wait...

    Just a rant

Well, I agree that prices are kind of high, but unless we're happy with over-the- air stations, we all just have to pay. I guess it's all relative to how you see it. If to you it's "just tv" than you're likely to find it too high, but I you're like me and many others who think of it as...

The Fight Network: 24/7 all fights

I don't need a 24/7 fight channel, all I have to do is open my window and listen to my neighbor and his wife. Seriously, while it doesn't interest me, I think it could be very popular here in the states.

E* and D* sharing LiL facilities?

They are both receiving the signal for this market from the same station too. I understand that they asked for bids and this one was the lowest.

    TV License in the UK

Well, I guess you're correct about that, but it's part of something else and isn't a stand-alone tax. Not to say that it still doesn't come out of our pockets.

    UK channels in the US?

I keep hearing rumors that DirecTV is thinking of adding Britain's Skynews and perhaps the BBC news. I think this would be great and hope it comes true. I'm not sure about entertainment shows. In many cases, the companies in the UK would not have the rights to air these shows in another county.

    Will this impact Satellite TV

I think it would be a real disaster. If channels were a la carte, the most popular channels such as ESPN, USA and TNT would be subscribed to by most everyone. However more specialized channels and those related to the arts and sciences such as Discovery, Bravo, Turner Classic Movies, C-SPAN and...

    TV License in the UK

I just recently read, in a British newspaper, that there's a move afoot in the parliament to increase the fee to 300 pounds and eliminate the difference between b/w and colour. Boy, am I glad they don't do that here, although it wouldn't surprise me if they tried. It sounds like it would be...

    just started as an installer

I'm not an accountant, but I'm pretty sure, if you're self-employed, you have to report and pay your taxes quarterly and not wait until the end of the year. The IRS isn't very forgiving even for honest mistakes so I would suggest you spend the money and have an accountant set you up the right...

    General Liability Ins?

Have you tried the company that you buy your homeowners and auto insurance from? I suspect that the major companies most likely have the type of insurance you require. You could also start calling the various independent agents in the phone book and see what they offer. As for what's affordable...

Cable TV - Good to Bad

How about American Movie Classics? When they started they showed mostly black and white classics of the 30s and 40s. They developed an audience and were the place to go to see these films uncut and commercial free. They got involved in restoration of classic films and were highly respected...

    Dumb Phone Call & Question

Funny,I had this same conversation with a friend at work just tonight and I really still don't understand what's the big deal about having to be hooked up to a phone line? MIne's been hooked up for over five years and as far as I can tell I've never gotten telemarketing calls as a result. When...

    Why self install?

Thanks guys, you made me feel right at home since I only discovered this site a few weeks ago and this was my first post. You all made good points. I hadn't considered people who buy used equipment from a secondary market. I only got thinking about this because a guy I know tried installing his...

    Why self install?

I've had satellite in my home for about 5 years now, and when I first got it I had it professionally installed . When I upgraded I also chose to have it installed again. I've always wondered with both Dish and DirecTV offering free installation, why would anybody, especially a first-timer, want...
