Why does dish changed the MPEG4SD channels to MPEG2SD now for PR.......Grrr..that will eat more space on the spotbeam....squashing chances of getting more HD channels in PR

Ever since Dish added the local Puerto Rican and Virgin Island network channels to their packages offered in the Virgin Islands I have wondered about the mapped down Dish channel assignments.

DISH
WVXF CBS ST THOMAS = 10
WVGN NBC VI = 14
WSJP PR = 17
WPRU ABC PR = 20
WSJX FOX PR = 24

The channel numbers correspond with the off air LP analog channels in Puerto Rico.

I didn't think Dish mapped local channels to their off air dial position. In fact I thought in most if not all markets local channels were all found in the 070 -079 channel positions and distant locals in the 240s.

Not that makes any difference and I am happy to have the channels anywhere on the dial, but I am curious about Dish's channel number assignment for these stations.

For most of us (well, for me here in VA), the local channels are mapped down to their current OTA broadcast/virtual channel numbers so everybody can find them without re-education.

Dish normally uses the actual map down number except for a few instances
-if its a subchannel being added Dish normally uses the RF channel UNLESS
-the RF channel is the same as the mapdown main channel...then they use the old digital (pre-conversion) number
-if both are taken...they randomly pick a number

An example near me is Mankato, MN. They have KEYC CBS & KEYC-DT2 Fox
KEYC is on 12
KEYC-DT2 they use 38. This is the number KEYC used pre-conversion (mapped to 12)

My Jacksonville FL FOX OTA channel is 30.1, which is mapped by Dish to 30.
MYTV 30.2 subchannel is mapped by Dish to 32, which isn't really random, and does have a sense of intuitiveness.

the My affiliate numbering falls under point 1 above.
The station (Fox & My) uses RF32 for OTA folks....hence the 2nd channel being 32.

actually with this move they are making more space less compression

The MPEG-4 standard yields excellent video quality at roughly 50% of the bitrate of its MPEG-2 predecessor .
Dont understan the change on the PR transponder.
