Advise on buying used 501 and dish for SA only

I currently don't subscribe to cable or dish or ?. I plan to pick up a 501 refurb off ebay and grab a used satellite (dish) off a friends house. (low budget) Am I crazy. What do I need to consider. I have about a 40 ft cable run from the proposed mount location on the roof to the existing hole in the wall for a cable (next to TV). I have read that I need the 18 inch dish. I plan to wire up two TV's (but with the same receiver - so same channel on both). I have good view of that sky for SA. What else do I need to be concerned about. thanks.

If you can get a used Dish, that’s great. No need to buy a new one.

As for the receiver, if you are getting a previously owned one, ask the seller for the R & S#’s. Call Dish (800-333-DISH) and make sure there is no balance on it.

Dish won’t activate a receiver with a balance unless its paid up.

In addition to the R & S numbers you need to make sure it has been "released" from the previous owner's account.
