Winning Coach Canned After 100-0 Blowout - BIG 12 Sports News Story - WISN Milwaukee

I actually agree with his philosophy of not apologizing.

What am I supposed to do if I coach a hockey team and win 12-0? "We don't deserve to win?"

I'm all for sportsmanship, but I don't agree with the concpet of "forefeit the game and make a bad team feel like winners when they don't deserve it."

Suppose I'm the coach of a basketball team and we're playing a bad team and have to win the last game of the season.

They're up by 25 points in the second half, and I call off the dogs, and then my team would blow the lead and lose.

If that happened, supporters of the team would want me fired on the spot, while others would say I showed class and dignity by not putting it in better players.

This makes me sick, IMO.

I have always been a firm believer in Herm Edwards' philosophy of "You play to win the game!"

If you lose 100-0- no offense, but you need to play better. I'm sick of some of this stupidity that festers in our country!

I have to read the story again, but they were still pressing at 50-0. IF YOUR TEAM loses a 50-0 lead....you suck JUST AS BAD if NOT WORSE than the team losing.

EDIT: From the link:
A parent who attended the game said Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

THAT is running up the score and terrible sportsmanship IF true. I don't know if I would fire him, but he shure as sh** would be spoken to. I coach teams that have been ranked in the top 10 in THE COUNTRY....if by the 5th inning, we have a 10 run lead. the dogs are called off. NO stealing, NO moving on sacs and I request AND INSIST my pitchers go with straight fastballs. I am not hear to show up AN players nor teams. I have been on BOTH ends of the spectrum and neither is very pretty.

I couldn't agree with you less. First off, we're not talking about professional athletes. The losing school (which specializes in teaching children with learning disabilites) fielded a team of 8 girls out of a total of 20 girls in the school.

Second, the winning team was shooting 3s into the 4th quarter. To me, the players/coach on the winning team are a disgrace to sports. It is shameful to run up a score like that in an amateur competition.

The score was 59-0 at the half. I don't think the winners were in danger of losing if they called of the dogs. Get Real.

:up:up:up:up:up

defending the bushleague coach and players on the winning side is pathetic.

I know this opinion seems unpopular with some, but I always grew up with the mindset of not letting up.

I was a witness to the type of nightmare scenario I once mentioned. I went to a football game at a Buffalo school () where the winning team had a huge lead, they took out the starters, and ended up losing the game.

Here's my favorite line from the article:

This clearly does not reflect a Christlike and honorable approach to competition

I wonder what Christ would consider fair when it comes to womens high school basketball.

Anyways, I don't think the guy should have been fired for this. Sure this wasn't the most classy act in sports history, but now all they're doing is throwing gas on the fire. In this day and age, you can't be firing people just because they don't agree with you. Is there any information as to how the guy's winning record was?

Also, what is this small school doing in a competitive league like this? At the VERY least, put them in a JV League, although really I think sports should just be inter mural there.

I don't think the losing team needs to be honored, but defending the bushleague coach and players on the winning side is pathetic.

This issue has always killed me...I am gonna try not to get political with this because it will lean that way....but the mentality of "sink or swim"/"eat or be eaten"....is BS. VERY FEW things in this world is black and white as some try to make them to be. I agree with you 100% that we should not honored getting your asses handed to you by a C-note....but to make the opposing coach some kind of martyr to stop being PC is bull****.

You ARE joking right?????

Yeah, me too. And supporting a high school coach that ran up the score to, 100-0 and then refused to apologize, has to be near the top of the list!

WOW!!!

I do think he should have let up some, but he didn't deserve to be fired.

I agree 100%. The game was over at halftime. What lessons was this guy coaching after that? Disgraceful. It's just a game. No need to humiliate anybody on this level.
