CW Adds Star Power to Pilot Roster
NBC greenlights John Wells-produced comedy

February 27 2006

LOS ANGELES --
The CW has ordered its first pilot since the merger of UPN and The WB, and it has a Star attached as well.

That would be Darren Star, the creator of "Sex and the City." He's among the executive producers of a drama called "Runaway" that the new network has greenlit. Over at NBC, meanwhile, producer John Wells ("The West Wing") has received the go-ahead for a comedy called "Prodigy/Bully."

"Runaway" follows a family who takes it on the lam after its patriarch is convicted of murder, with the hope of proving his innocence, the showbiz trade papers report. The show comes from Darren Star Productions and Sony Pictures TV -- not, the network points out, The CW's parents, Warner Bros. and CBS Corp.

Chad Hodge ("Tru Calling," "I Want to Marry Ryan Banks") is writing the script. Star, whose most recent series was FOX's short-lived "Kitchen Confidential," and Ed Zuckerman ("Law & Order," "Century City") will executive produce.

While "Runaway" is the first pilot The CW has ordered since it came into existence last month, the network also took over a few projects originally ordered by UPN and The WB. Among them are the "Aquaman" project and a spinoff of "Girlfriends" called "The Game."

At NBC, "Prodigy/Bully" is about a family whose genius son uses his intellect to manipulate those around him. The project represents a rare foray into TV comedy for Wells, who's best known for dramas "The West Wing" and "ER."

Steve Elliott and Hank Perlman wrote the script and will executive produce with Wells, Jon Feldman and Paris Barclay. Perlman is also set to direct the pilot.
