Haha, clever, huh?Anyway, I was just gonna see if any of you guys play this game / series as well? I never played Demon Souls and so I missed out entirely on the first iteration of this series. But I got Dark Souls for my birthday in 2011 (really shortly after it's release). I didn't play it for quite some time because I was enjoying Skyrim. When I finally got around to popping Dark Souls in the disk tray, and it was so good I lost my tan for a while. The game was so involving and enjoyable I had no desire to go outside or play anything else. It was a challenging and rewarding experience. Then I got involved in the player vs player, and it was every bit as enveloping and rewarding. I got particularly good at that aspect, and became pretty well known in the "fight clubs" held in the game's inner community.I recently picked up Dark Souls II and the experience has been just as enjoyable. So has anyone else played either of these great games?

I haven't played any of the games in this series but I plan on renting Dark Souls II sometime after I send inFamous Second Son back to Gamefly. It just depends on whether they send me that or Watch Dogs first.

If I may - go back and get Dark Souls (One) also. You can pick up a new copy at GameStop or Wal-Mart for 15-19 dollars, and it's a steal. You're looking at 20 bucks for 50 hours of entertainment, or 200 if you get really into the PvP aspect. It'll also give you a background in the gameplay, which is something that takes some getting used to. Particularly so if you're used to the "floaty" uninvested gameplay of a game like Skyrim. In Dark Souls, you feel the combat a lot more. You don't glide around wildly swinging - your attacks are metered by a stamina bar, and swinging larger, heavier weapons requires your character to root his feet before and during (unless the attack is some sort of leaping or running attack). This makes combat against even simplistic, weak enemies challenging when you factor in a large number of them. Rather than just hacking through squads at a time, you have to manage your stamina so that you can safely defeat portion of the enemies while leaving enough to roll (the game's dodging system) or block (which slows stamina recovery and drains stamina for each hit deflected) the incoming attacks of the remaining enemies. All of this creates a greater challenge and, by relation to that, a greater sense of accomplishment.

Yeah, I have thought about picking up Dark Souls on PC several times. I have seen it on sale through steam and other game sites for about $7 and I would definitely be in at that price. The only thing that kept me from pulling the trigger is the fact that Games for Windows Live is shutting down and they haven't announced any plans to patch it out like WB did with the Arkham games. I don't want to buy it now, only to have them make it unplayable before I can finish it.

I could rent it from gamefly or buy it if I see a good price on PS3 but I have so many games I'm trying to get through right now.

I know how a big backlog can really jump on you. I've been playing so much DkSII and LoL, I haven't paid much attention to my other games. I finally got through South Park and the Stick of Truth though, and it was pretty enjoyable.

I think it's a safe bet that they'll update the game to remove the GFW DRM. That's a pretty well known game, and if they DON'T remove it then they can't make anymore money off of it. If this were a 5+ year old game I'd understand them saying forget it, but this game came out less than 2 years ago. Don't forget that Bioshock 2 also had GFW but they still removed it and converted it to Steamworks.

I agree that it makes sense that they would remove it. The fact that they have kept quiet while other games have already been patched makes me wonder though. If they would just make an announcement confirming that they are going to remove it I would pick it up next time it's on sale. I bet they lost quite a few potential sales leading up to the release of Dark Souls 2 from people like me, looking to get into the franchise but worried the game wouldn't work in a month or so.

The fact that the top of the discussion page on steam has a sticky of user created mods like DSfix because the developers didn't bother to fix the problems is a little concerning too. It's great that the community took it upon themselves to fix performance issues and something like that can only happen on PC. It also shows that the developers didn't care that much about the PC port though.

If they didn't care enough to patch their game on PC before there is a chance they wont patch out GFWL either. Luckily it sounds like they took a lot more care when they made the Dark Souls 2 PC port. They might actually fix the GFWL problem though. Like you said, they won't be able to sell anymore copies if it's unplayable. That's a lot more motivating for them than some upset fans on a Steam message board.

Personally I think you should all wait for this version:

Haha, without ever playing any game in this franchise I can say that this feels like a stretch. I have heard lots of reviewers praise Dark Souls 1 and 2 as one of their favorite games. I have also heard that they are very punishing and because of that they aren't for everyone. I don't think I've ever heard a reviewer call DS a bad game, let alone the worst game they've ever played. I guess I've just played a lot of bad games and that statement makes me wonder how many games this reviewer has played.

It's actually an interesting and LOOONG read. And this isn't just some guy that "Doesn't get it." He has hundreds of hours under his belt from DS1 (although he admitted he didn't like it, so it just sounds like he's torturing himself if you ask me.) There's a bit more on the article (and some retorts against it) here from Kotaku.

I hate the fact that every time some violent incident happens the media tries to blame it on video games. The headline should be about the incident not a hobby the author doesn't understand. When these things happen the press doesn't dig into the criminal's Netflix history to see if they watched Saw or other torture porn movies and these are way more violent than anything I can remember doing in video games. They don't check their kindle to see if they read Stephen King books.

The reason is that old people don't understand video games. In their mind they are just murder simulators with no story or redeeming qualities. They grew up with books and movies so they understand that enjoying something from those mediums didn't make them a murderous lunatic. Video games will continue to be blamed for everything until the people who grew up with games are in charge.

The internet based headline isn't much better..

That entire highlighted portion would have made for a much more relevant headline than bringing up a kid's hobbies. Comments are disabled for this article and it's probably because they would be full of people telling them how ridiculous their headline is. It's just clickbait.

That man is a hero.DkS II is especially impressive, since to Platinum it you have to get the Illusionary Ring of the Conqueror and the Illusionary Ring of the Exalted. One requires you to complete an entire playthrough without resting at a bonfire (refills health, flasks, equipment durability and spell uses). The other requires you to complete an enitre playthrough without a single death...which is kind of what Dark Souls is famous for. I completed the No Death Run for my Illusionary Ring of the Conqueror for PvP, because I hate advertising whether I'm using my Pyro Glove or Scimitar, and it makes parries harder for my opponent to predict. All that aside, it has bothered me since day one that the rings are named "Illusionary" instead of "Illusory".
