I've only had Cband, FTA and OTA TV now since 1988. I'm wondering what the advantage is to buying one of these when all they (Dish) advertise online are 2 year contract package deals? Doesn't the equipment come with the 2 year contract pricing or can you get a cheaper monthly service if you already have your own equipment?

No the service is higher at the list price but you do not have the 2 year contract if you own your own equipment you can cancel at any time

Exactly. No contract and you can deactivate and activate this equipment as you please as it's owned equipment.
