Needing to use this equipment for a Texas ranch cabin and being allowed to connect to the owner's existing Dish service. Questions: 1.) how important is it to have a completely unobstructed view of the Southern sky and 2.) How much coaxial cable can be run from the receptor to the receiver without distortion?

An unobstructed view is necessary. A couple hundred feet of quality RG6 is doable.

Since you posted in the Canadian sat section, which service are you expecting to use with which receiver, and what dish model and LNB is the cabin equipped with?
